How important is finishing IGETC?

I got admitted into LA, and I put on my application that I'd finish my 2nd semester of foreign language this summer. I want to take a class in Chemistry instead, would I be in danger of getting rescinded from UCLA if I drop my foreign language class requirement and register to take Chemistry instead?

do you need chem to fulfill IGETC too? i wouldn't advise you drop your foreign language class if you told ucla that you'd be taking it in the summer to finish your IGETC since they probably would rescind you.

I thought of taking a food and wine pairing class this summer just for fun, but I don't want to deal with the hassle of informing Cal, etc.

So based on that, there is no chance in hell I would fail to take a class I told them I was going to take. I don't like to live that dangerously. Even if I called and they told me it was cool, I wouldn't trust them...or I'd ask to get it in writing that it was ok. It's your call though.

If you said you would have IGETC done and then you do not they can rescind you.

yeah what malishka31 said....if you said you were going to, you must...they offered you admission with the expectation of you completing that...call the school and talk with one of their counselors if you are still considering not finishing igetc!

very important

You gotta know what you told them.

I'm going to a UC in the fall and I still don't really know what IGETC is :p

I completed some other requirements (2 writing, 2 quantitative, foreign language in high school, and 4 other classes??)

i'm actually in a similar situation. i got admitted to ucla as a civil engineering major and had originally checked that i would finish IGETC. after reviewing the GEs for the henry samueli school of engineering, it seems like they don't even accept IGETC as fulfillment of GEs. will not completing IGETC affect my admission?

i'm pretty sure IGETC is NOT recommended for engineering majors so i don't think it'll be a problem if you don't complete it.

For IGETC, I had foreign language in high school. How are they supposed to note that in my certification? Should i bring my high school transcript to my CC, or can I just tell them?

IGETC does NOT work for engineering- but- if you told them you would have it done on your application and now you will not you should contact engineering and tell them that you will not have it done and see if it will impact your admission in any way. If you will still have the units and everything else done engineering might be fine with your change.

Other colleges within the university, such as L&S might advise you to complete the ceretification as they based their decision on it being complete.

Fasterfirefox- didnt you have to give your CC your high school transcripts to begin with? they should have them on file, and if they dont , yes you will need to bring them in unless they tell you otherwise. No one knows the rules of your community college but i am certain that you just telling them is not enough.

yeah you need to contact your HS and have them officially send the transcripts to either your CC or the UC you're transfering to to show proof. If you send it to your CC, they can send the official IGETC certification to your UC.

I don't remember having to give my CC HS transcripts - probably because I was already 18 when I registered, and my high school is in another country. I have my transcripts, though, so I can just bring them for my certification, right?

Go ask your CC. Some require them to come directly from the other country with a proper translation.
