Title speaks for itself. Also, getting into a top undergraduate school as a transfer, while working full-time; would admissions cut a little slack on GPA?

If you are above or at the minimum then yes but if you are below it admissions will not in my experience.

Jobs however could potentially hire you if your GPA is low and your experience is high. For example, a classmate was hired at one of the Big 4 accounting firms over another last year for one important reason. His work experience. His father and uncles run a accounting consultant firm. He has been working there and around it since he was in High School. He had a 3.4 GPA and received a job at the firm. When he was interviewing this girl, who we know mutually, was applying for the same position. She was president of the accounting club, 3.94 GPA, honors accounting, and the works. He was hired over her.

But don’t plan on something like that happening. I had some impressive experience.

Were you turned down by jobs, with your work experience?

How low are we talking about here?

Are you transferring from a community college?

JuggernautCos0,

As you said, your friend had a 3.4 GPA and a working experience at a consulting firm. Believe me, 3.4 is not a very low GPA. But, for instance, if your friend had a 2.4 GPA and a working experience, he would not be hired by the big 4. Lets put it like this: if your GPA is between 3.5-4.0, then you can get a job by having only an internship or even none at all. On the other hand, if your GPA is between 3.0-3.5, then your working experience/internships play a crucial role. But even worse, your GPA is 2.5-3.0–you can obtain a job only by having some strong connections, and all of the above.

GPA is important for your first real job.(one using your degree) after that GPA wont matter…

Yea except for law schools and b schools, they don’t matter right? FrenchBoy you got a low GPA I am assuming.

I just got back in school, and I’m in a whole new major than before. This summer I’m pulling a couple A’s and a C. I know that working full-time and going to school will take its toll on my GPA. I’m projecting a 3.0-3.4ish GPA when its all said and done. I’m hoping that my work experience will pick up the slack. I’m 24 years old now, so by the time I’m done I should be 26 pushing 27 with 5 years of solid work experience.

@cbreeze, yes I will be a JUCO transfer

That’s interesting. I’m also 24 and will be 26 or 27 when I graduate and am a “JUCO” transfer.

I have to say, I’m really glad I worked for 4 years before going to college and learned how to act professional. In all of my classes I feel and act way more mature than most of my classmates and this in turn leads to my professors taking a liking to me. If I had gone to college at 18 I would have sunk like a rock as I was a complete idiot at that age. What a difference a few years makes.

Duh as far as graduates schools, but if he’s talking about straight work, then no.

Dawgie , of all people you should know that. haha Mr. GPA is King/Rank is King himself…

GPA is King because it’s a proxy for direction-following-ability, which is the inverse of intelligence, which is correlative with Testosterone. High-Testosterone types are not welcome in most large companies unless they are in a position where they are exalted, i.e. CEO. Bernie Ebbers was a man’s man and a CEO, and you know that the last thing you’d ever see him do is get hired by an accounting firm or something like that.

I’m already with a company I’m pretty happy with. I just got another promotion to Assistant Manager, my third in less than two years. I’m moving back to Southern Cali too! So wouldn’t this type of experience over ride a good, not great GPA? By the time I’m finished with school I can easily be a Branch Manager or doing something in the Commercial Dept. like credit analyst or something. My goal is to be a Wealth Management PM, Commercial Banking PM, or get into Consulting. Not just get into those fields but be at the top.

@Inmotion12; I couldn’t agree more with everything you said, especially about being an idiot at 18-19 hahaha. What area are you in?

FootballBanker, your Capitalization makes me proud.

What school are you shooting for? one of the UC’s?

Yes, I am shooting for UC Irvine or UC Santa Barbara. I will be sending apps to UCLA, and Berkley, and keep my fingers crossed. If I can’t get into a UC, I will settle for Cal Poly Slo, SD State, Fullerton, or Long Beach.
