How important is GPA in college admissions?

So, how do most colleges view GPA?

My school is fairly competitive, making it very hard to keep a 5.0/5.0 GPA

Only 5 out of 800 kids in my class were able to keep a 5.0/5.0 GPA last year (freshmen year), and only 2 students out of 800 this year have a GPA of 5.0/5.0

Will having a GPA of 3.75-3.8 prevent me from getting into some top schools like Rice, Duke, williams, or colgate?

I know I still have a lot of time left till' college admissions, but I can't help but feel depress when looking at my GPA...... Especially when people have GPA's of 3.96 UW yet are ranked 30/300 on here...

Most schools don’t care as much about GPA as they do about course load. Take hard courses and do your best; a perfect GPA means nothing if the straight-A’s are from easy classes.

Eh, don’t worry about it. Colleges barely look at GPA

GPA is important only if you dont have a class rank or anything that will seperate you from your classmates

GPA is taken in the context of the school. For example, a 5.0 GPA is literally impossible at my school.

A lot of schools (like UCs) emphasize GPA, though it’s more standardized.

Course load is the most important factor in the transcript part of college admissions. GPA as a number is less important I think, what’s more important is the actual grade you earn in the classes you take. Some people have varying GPAs because they took more classes than others or did bad/good in classes that colleges don’t really care about.
