How important is having 4 years of science?

Either im gonna take journalism for my senior year or environmental science. I would like to take journalism but ive heard 4 years of science is a must, and environmental science is the only science i can take.. so how much of a difference does a course of science over an elective make, if any?

Depends on what you want to pursue down the road. For science/math/engineering it might be better. For political science, history, etc, not so much. However, the first place to start is with the colleges you are interested in, and see what they see.

my major will be finance or management.

The guidance counsellors at our high school say that four years of science are a must for selective colleges. What type of schools are you aiming for?

I only have two years of science (AP Biology and AP Physics) and one summer of Chemistry and I got admitted to Columbia University. Honestly, they want to see the whole package; they will not penalize you for having two or three years of science. Just make sure that you are strong in other areas.

but compared to journalism, doesn't environmental science look much better? :S (both of these courses are not related to my major)

I am currently a senior in HS, and wanted to take Journalism rather then Science, but my GC was emphatic that my first choice college would want to see 4 years of Science. So, I enrolled in Environmental Science (which I actually ended up enjoying), and pursued the journalism piece by serving as EIC of my school's Lit Mag, getting a couple of essays published, and taking a "pre-college" course in Magazines at a local college on Saturdays. This way, I was able to fulfill the science "requirement", and still pursue my interests while racking up some decent ECs. Good luck to you!

I'm not sure it's that necessary. My dd only took 3 years of social studies (one was an AP and 2 were honors) and got into most places she applied including several top-20 liberal arts colleges. One or two of those schools listed that they wanted 4 years of social studies but it didn't seem to affect her admissions at all. The rest of her coursework was strong.

yeah but its supposedly better to take 4 years of science just like math and english.

It's supposedly better to take 4 years of social studies too. It's better to take four years of everything, get a perfect SAT score and a 4.0 and win national awards, but it's not necessary. But yeah, I was worried about science too :)

Honestly from your follow up posts it seems you're already decided.
