How important is Major GPA?

I'm about to finish my fourth year at my community college and I've been getting straight A's up until this semester. So, my overall GPA is currently 4.0, but I've only taken 1 Calculus class that counts towards my major, which is Computer Science.

I've had a rough semester this Spring. I had to deal with a lot of family issues and depression and all this has taken a toll on my grades. Right now, I'm borderline B/A for all three of my classes and if I calculated my GPA right my overall GPA will go down to a 3.88 and my major GPA will go down to 3.2. This really worries me because I don't know if this will drop my stock by a lot with some good schools. It also makes me depressed because it feels like it kind of "nullifies" the work I've done in past semesters.

Does anyone know what to make of this? How important is Major GPA as opposed to overall GPA? Any advice or input is appreciated. Thanks.

Where do you want to transfer to? It depends.

I bet for impacted majors, Major GPA holds a lot more weight.

I applied to all the UCs except Riverside, Merced, and Santa Cruz.

Major GPA is a factor for UCLA. As anavera said, it might be a strong factor in a very selective major.

Hm, if I get 3 B’s this semester but get A’s for every class after this semester, would UCLA and other UCs overlook this?

I can definitely say it works in your favor that your grades have improved, but I don’t know how much it’ll help.

My counselor suggested that I improve my grades and talk about my “bad” semester in my personal statement.

But, sometimes I lurk on CC.com and people make it seem like it’s game over if you get a few (like 2 or 3) B’s and you apply to good schools, with a selective major.

Are my chances still decent if I get 3 B’s and 5-7 A’s for my major classes, and I have 20+ A’s for GEs and electives?

For certain schools and certain majors, it could mean game over. But it all depends on how the admissions reviews your application, what is important to them, and all that. I don’t want want to give you a definite yes or no to your question because I could be wrong. But I’ll definitely say that there are people out there who have gotten accepted with worse stats. Just don’t lose hope.
