I'm currently a student at NYU-Poly; majoring in Computer Science. I'm thinking about transferring to SUNY Buffalo.

I've been recently second-guessing myself, however. I feel like I'm basing my decision off an immature and short-sided judgement of the school. There's no actual campus and the student interaction is almost non-existent. It's not completely horrible, but it definitely has room for improvement. I need more of a "campus" feel with student interaction -- extracurriculars, events and clubs. (there's like no girls at this school either)

My hesitation begins when I look into the future. SUNY Buffalo is definitely not as prestigious as NYU Poly (especially with its recent merger with NYU). In addition, NYU-Poly is a strictly technical school so would their students appeal more to major companies in my field? Being a Freshman, I'm not too familiar with internships at either school, but I know its a major factor in qualifications.

I want to work major companies like Google or Facebook and I've heard of students here already landing internships with them.

Am I making a mistake if I transfer out of Poly? Will I miss out on opportunities that are associated with strictly technical schools? I'm going to finish Freshman year at Poly and either remain a student or transfer for Fall 2011.

If you want to major in CS, think about SUNY Stony Brooks. I haven’t seen Buffalo competing in ACM Great New York competition (maybe they did… i don’t remember). But SB is very strong in computer science. I know that by experience as well. I say SB because it’s closer to New York, and plus, tuition is the same if you are a NY resident. Why would you want to move to Buffalo (8-10 hours drive)… when you can come back to the city in less than 2 hrs?

I never liked NYU-Poly just because the tuition doesn’t match with its prestigiousness. If it’s possible to go to NYU instead, you can stick with NYU. The CS there is not bad, pretty strong.

Another option is come to CCNY lol not a prestigious school like NYU. I say the CS program at CCNY is fair. You get what you need. If you want to get big internship from Google, probably not. But since Columbia is just a station away from CCNY, and there is this “Facebook @ Columbia” you can check it out.

Regardless you have many choices. If you decide to go to Buffalo, you will missed a lot of fun in the City. So you might think about these schools: NYU, Columbia, CCNY, Stony Brook.

I say either CCNY or Stony if you can’t pay the tuition.

To answer your last question: no, you will only missed the opportunity if you never go out and seek one for yourself. If you want to find abundant opportunities, you should stay in the City.
