How Important Is Rank

Normally I wouldn't post here, but I'm genuinely curious. How important is rank to the MIT decision process. I'm 11 out of about 105, but I keep hearing everyone say you need to be in the top 5% to get in to a really good school. So, is it extremely important?

I don’t really know. I’m pretty sure that at least at MIT, rank will neither get you in nor keep you out, as long as your rank is something reasonable (which 11 out of about 105 is, I think). If you get in, it will probably be because of something much more awesome than class rank, and that something will be so awesome it will make class rank not matter so much.

Since only .10 GPA points likely separates you and the Val, I’d say it’s not important at all. However, I admit, for Mega public schools 500-1000 senior class, there’s something impressive about graduating #1.

Depends on the mega public school…

If you look at the first response to this thread, you’ll see that rank is “considered.”

I don’t think this is completely true. My senior class had almost 500 people (only because people dropped out or moved schools), but I was accepted over the person who was ranked #1.
