How important is the essay in consideration for one's admission to NYU?

The NYU Common Data Set says it’s Very Important.

Thanks Vonlost.

I heard that it isn’t important at all for Stern, which is almost completely stats-based (again, this is what I’ve been hearing). Can anyone shed some light?

Huge. I consider it the primary reason I got into the school.

We attended an info session/campus tour today and the speaker said the essay was the most important part of the application to her. She was not speaking specifically about Stern, but she did say that in the more competitive majors most people applying have the necessary stats, so often the essay is the deciding factor.

Those essays are you. NYU doesn’t reject people. NYU rejects applicants.
