How Important is the Essay?

So I'm applying to the school of engineering as a transfer student from a community college in NJ and I'll have an AS in engineering. I have a 4.0 and my high school record was good as well.

I was just wondering if the essay could ruin my chances because I know transferring is a little more competitive than regular admissions. My essay is also a little short at the moment (1500 characters). I plan on adding a little more, but I've said basically what I feel needed to be said. I'm thinking they might look down upon it if it isn't nearly at their 3800 character limit. I don't think the essay is lacking in quality too much, but I' not the best writer either so maybe not as good as the others.

So will the essay hurt my chances a lot or because of my academics and other credentials will it not have much of an effect? Also is there an unwritten character minimum that should be written?

So I submitted my application. I ended up writing 2500 characters~415 words.

the essay matters. it shows who you are as a person.

the essay basically weeds out the applicants that are worthy of scholarships. If you are an amazing student and with a good essay, you will get a scholarship. The essay doesn’t way heavy for rutgers, however do your best.

rutgers isn’t HUGE on the essay, but they do read the essays of “bubble students.” If your scores/grades put you well above or below the median, they probably wont read it. But if you’re in the middle, they will.
