How important is the interview?

how impt is the interview? i know better than to turn one down when offered, but how do interviews work? are they offered to a random group of ppl? ppl at the top of the application pool? do ED ppl get them too? and…if the interview goes well, how great of a positive effect can the interview have on your chances, if any?? sorry for the paragraph of ?s, but thanks

The interview isn't that important compared to everything else in your application. It's just another way in which to get to know that applicant better. I had mine back in January with an alumni in Chicago. I think there were about 10 alumni there that day. The alumna called me about 2 weeks before, and asked if I was available for an interview, which I was. So he told me when and where to show up. Mine was apparently about twice as long as most people's, so I hope that's a good sign.

Overall, it was just a relaxed conversation. No stress at all. I was told to dress casual, but it appeared some people didn't get the message. Girls shoes up in dresses and heals. This one girl's face was totally priceless. She was dressed in a formal business outfit, and her interviewer, a total hippy in jeans and a plaid shirt who looked like she haden't slept in days, called her name. You could just tell that this girl was like 'Oh Crap!". Definitely not a meshing of personalities.

I hope my interview is like that. I finally got called for an interview yesterday and it is today.

Good luck!
My interview was really low key, and the girl was super nice.

they aren't very important at all...do well but don't think it'll change the fate of your application. So if you have a great interview, don't get your hopes up extra...

ClaySoul
you said "they aren't very important at all". about interviews. I also noticed that you applied as a RUE student. Does the RUE interview really matters? They say that it is just for finalists. And i didn't get contacted yet but i know some people that were contacted. I'm asking for fin. aid. So those people contacted for interview are going to be accepted and i'm NOT?

what is a finalist chances?

what's the RUE?

Resumed Undergraduate Education

I'm sorry. I saw one of your posts from last year and assumed that you were applying as a RUE. The other people on the thread were RUE tough. My mistake

I also had an interview in February. The interesting thing is that I talked with the interviewer over the Internet (Skype), and that's because I am from Romania and there are no Brown alumni. The alumni I talked to was living in Switzerland, and I have no idea whether I did a good job or not :D. It was my first interview ever and I was quite nervous, though we just had a relaxed conversation, as someone was saying before. Hope it'll be fine in the end.

The interview means nothing. I went to a Brown Information Session provided by some nearby alumni, and the representative from Admissions told a story about a kid who was so nervous, he vomited at his interview. Despite this embarrassing story, he was still accepted. She asserted that the interviews are only held to get a better idea of Brown and ask questions.

"the representative from Admissions told a story about a kid who was so nervous, he vomited at his interview"

LMAO, I wonder if that was the end of the interview right there, or if he cleaned himself up and continued.

when I went to mine, she told me it "couldn't hurt me if it went badly"
idk if that's true but it made me feel better

i doubt it means "nothing". Here's what my interviewer said:

"Hi XXX,

Thank you so much for your kind note. I, too, greatly enjoyed our interview. You are a very impressive young man and I want you to know that I am unhesitatingly recommending you for Brown. Not that I’ve got a lot of influence. My voice, of course, is but one of many contributing factors. I just hope that everyone else in on the same page."

it just probably means nothing if you screwed up on it...? or just probably circumstantial im guessing. but even if it was positive i doubt it's going to have a big effect since a lot of interviews are going to be good.

My step mother does them and says they don't mean anything. Similarly, one of my father's friends does Princeton interviews and he says in the 11 he's done, he recommended all but 1- only that 1 got in.

I interview for Dartmouth. Its pretty meaningless. It is basically used to add something the candidate might have not said in the application (i.e. the reason I had a bad semester was because I was ill).
