At this point my daughters major in college would not need math.
She goofed in 8th grade by not taking Algebra I. She is going into 10th grade and right now is signed up for Honors Geometry. I am wondering if she should take Geometry over the summer so in 10th grade she could either take Algebra II or Algebra II honors (although have heard some horror stories), then precalc in 11th, and calc in 12th. If she doesn't take it over the summer then she will end with precalc.

Does anyone know how important the math track is to getting into schools like JMU, VA Tech, UVA? Would it be better to get another honors course under her belt with honors geometry? Any opinions on if she should take Online Geometry over the summer?

Thanks!

I wouldn’t recommend she take online Geometry unless she has a very solid math background because she may flounder. If her major in college wouldn’t need math why would she consider Va Tech? She would probably be OK for JMU but not UVA. Colleges evaluate the strength of schedule the student chose and UVA is very competitive.

Is she good at math? Does the Geometry course you’re considering receive positive reviews? Will she be able to handle the workload in the summer?

Keep in mind that some kids are taking Algebra I in 6th grade so, in the ‘paper chase’ kinda way - your daughter was three years behind some kids when she took it in 9th grade. My general viewpoint is that its far better to do well in the classes that a student is in than to try to impress with ‘high track’ achievements.

I would not do an on-line Geometry course. There are a lot of proofs involved which benefit from a dialogue as to how to work through them (at least that’s my take).
