Hey Everyone,

I am about to take the PSAT (well prepared for it) and I was wondering how important of a factor is it in the admissions process? Any help appreciated

Thanks

Hey Everyone,

its not any factor, unless you get national merit status

No colleges will ever ask for your PSAT scores; however, it is a very good idea to study for the test and qualify for National Merit scholarships in your junior year. National Merit Semifinalist/Finalist status can always be included under the ‘Academic Honors’ section of the CommonApp. Look up your state’s cutoff score so you will have a good idea of what score to aim for.

Thanks guys…

The cut-off score for National Merit Scholarship Commended and Semi-Finalist status varies from state to state and from year to year. Commended is usually around 200, and Semi-Finalist is higher than that (in Maryland, it is usually around 220).

Take a practice test at home and see if it is worth your time to take the real one.

It’s irrelevant. Just hope to make National Merit. Even then…it’s pretty much irrelevant. Top schools don’t care about NMSF, nor do they give money for it. The test will not give you practice for the SAT.

The PSAT is just another CollegeBoard scam, basically.

But the PSAT is a decent indicator of how well you’d do on the SAT if you took it right now, so that’s one good thing about it - it can help you gauge how much more you should be studying for the real deal.

how important is the psat?
not

Things like having to get a 220 on the PSAT in maryland make he hate living here sometimes.

Seeing as i will probably not get that, if i get at least a 200 and get “commended”, how much influence will that have for my application.

^^^^^None.

not too much but it’s nice to have

PSAT has value in getting admission to some select summer programs before senior year besides the merit scholarship and making the college app look good
