How important is the SAT for internationals?

hey there :)

I'm having a hard time scoring a decent sat score on my mock exams :(. I scored 760 on maths 2, and 780 on physics on the 23th jan sitting, but I'm scoring 550-600 on CR and W (750+ on maths)

My question is, how much do SAT scores matter for internationals? I don't think that my scores represent my real ability in English. I could easily score above 105 on Toefl, have been studying English for almost 12 years and I think I'm really good at it, but when it comes to the SAT, those wordy and lengthy sentences with strange words... :S

I was looking at the MIT website, and they said that internationals could choose to send they TOEFL instead of their SAT 1 score (still need the subject tests though). This clearly shows that SAT 1 scores aren't that important to MIT. How about other colleges? What do you think?

:)

It’s really hard to say really, it depends a lot.
In my opinion, TOEFL’s reading comprehension part of the exam doesn’t come close to the SAT critical reading.
You gotta be aware that you’ll be competing with other internationals and their SAT1 scores vary a lot. If I were you, I would take it one more time and then don’t worry about it. You’ll probably also ace the TOEFL, but personally, I doubt that a good TOEFL score will offset an average SAT1 CR+W score.
Some people do have a hard time with SAT1, so if that’s your case, take AP English Comp and Lit! Prove that you can get a 5. If you are up to it, take the ACT and see if you can do better.

I’m an international, APs don’t exist over here :S

I guess it depends how much you can contribute to your education, most universities will accept you if you have the money, except for top schools

unfortunately, I don’t have that much money, so financial aid is crucial to me :(

Hm… APs do exist in lots of places outside the US, but if that’s out of the question, then alright.
Ok, do you have an idea about what you want to pursue as your major?
If so, do you have relevant/impressive extra curricular activities to support that? Sometimes that is worth a lot than what you score in a 4 hour exam… Show you have a passion for something and that you accomplished a lot and your average SAT1 is not going to play a huge factor.

Computer Science

Indeed, I do have very strong extra curricular activities, both related and non related to CS (leading and organizing positions, lots of them), and most important, things that I really love doing, not just odd stuff to make the list longer

I’m really counting on my ECs :P

lower SAT still has negative impact in your admission even you’re an int’l. I suggest you should try to improve your school. When MIT and other schools sound like SATI for int’ls isn’t that important, you should also come to mind that a whole lot of int’ls’ SAT score is amazing, and for sure schools will consider them first when you have similar curriculum.

At my school we take 2250 to be a good SAT I score for top US schools. Scores above that don’t matter too much.
