How important is the traditional college campus atmosphere?

When i think of college life i think of those parties you see in the movies where everyone is packed into a dorm or frat house or something...i kind of want to experience that...but what if you go to a college in new york city or something that doesnt really have that campus feel to it...would you be missing out?

In my opinion, the who point of college is the traditional campus atmosphere. It doesn’t matter whether by traditional you mean a highly intellectual and serious school like Chicago or Columbia or a wilder school like Dartmouth or Wisconsin-Madison. As long as there is a cohesive and well-defined campus, students are bound to find their niche and have a great time.

^^^ you are from dubai? im also seriously considering the american university at dubai…im definitley transfering after a couple of years. As a matter of fact the main reason im not going there straight out of high school is for this college atmosphere reason. I want to experience the college life and then go to dubai to pursue my career. But if i go to NYU or Pace im probably not going to experience that here either. I was really considering hofstra too, but then i read a review of it that says its kind of a commuter school and not too much stuff going on in the dorms. The problem is that all of the schools with the dorm life are schools kind of in the middle of nowhere, and i want to be close to NYC.

I know tons of people going to UGA…should i just come down to fulfill my partying needs every couple weekends then go back up to new york? Would that work out?:D

Why do you want to be close to NYC?

Hey Alexandre, have you heard opf BITS Dubai? My friend wants to go there and wanted some first-hand input on the college.

There are no good universities in the Middle East. The American University of Beirut is solid, and the American Universities of Dubai and Sharaj are average. Other than those, universities in Dubai are below average to plain horrible. Furthermore, Dubai is not designed for college students. It is expensive and its population tends to be highly uneducated. It is just not a good place to go to college.

because i moved away a few years ago and have been looking forward to moving back ever since. Honestly the president of harvard could come to my door, offer me a full scholarship and a new car, and i would choose a school in new york in a second.

Regarding dubai, without getting to specific or personal, i am fortunate enough to have many family connections in the region and i will inevitably be working there in the future, so it only makes sense for me to get a better feel for the area by going to college there.

nyc34, you can move to NYC when you are done with college. I really don’t understand the rush. NYC will not vanish overnight. Besides, let us face it, NYC is not really designed for minors and college students. Most of what NYC has to offer is intended for a slightly older crowd…one that generally has a pretty healthy cashflow!

And you can learn about Dubai by visiting over a couple of summers.
