How important is the writing section of the ACT

How important is the writing section of the ACT? Do colleges even care?

Yes. Most of the higher ranked colleges require the writing portion of the ACT if u decide to send in ACT scores. So…Take the writing section!!

i realize it’s required, but how important is it when determining admissions?

Obviously it’s important enough to be required. I’d say it’s just as important as the other portions of the ACT.

Thank you! any other opinions?

Eh, probably in top rank schools they seriously look at th writjng portions but at state schools and other lower colleges I doubt they care much about it. A lot of colleges say, " ACT/SAT written portions must be submited but are not factored into admission process". So for most state schools and some others, even though they require them, I doubt they care much for them, appl. Essays are probably have a better effect

Not as important as the composite. Some schools require it but don’t look at it.

JMO…For some schools, it’s important. I think that it will continue to gain in importance each year. Currently, many schools are requiring writing and are trying to determine how to incorporate it into their admisssions process.

Okay, cuz I got a 12 on the writing so I want it to be super important, lol. obviously before I took the ACT i wanted it to be irrelevan

bump 10char

bump 10char

I seriously hope you are wrong CrystalJ  I got a measly 8 on the writing but a 36 composite…

lol i got a 33 composite. what are your college plans?

If I understand correctly, the essay serves as a means for colleges to guarantee your writing skills. They do this mostly to be sure that you wrote the essays submitted with the application. As long as there’s not a big disparity between your ACT writing score and your essays, you should be fine. Colleges realize that you can’t always write effectively & creatively with a time constraint and generic topic. Of course, you’ll want to do as well as possible on both the ACT essay and your real essays.
