how important is the writing section?

doe anyone have any comments on the writing section? how iportant is it? can it be detrimental if you get like 600-650 even if you have 800 on math and 700-750 on verbal?
thanks.

How important it will be for applications to the 2006 freshman class is to a significant extent unknown. Many colleges have expressed that they will be cautious on their reliance on the section because they need a few years to see statistically what students do, many will probably view it as important but huge numbers have not expressed any views yet, and still others (like Georgetown has already declared) won't use it all for 2006.

Depends on the school. If a school had previously required the writing SAT II, then I would assume that the writing section is still going to play a large role.

We have been told at Univ of Toronto and Rutgers that they will not consider at all the writing test for the class of 2006. UToronto is a school that previously required the SAT II.

The only schools guaranteed to use the writing in the app process are the UC's (they have to, since they sponsored the change).

Most other schools have mentioned that it won't be a factor for a year or so.

that would be nice.
so even harvard yale stanford and the other ivies are giving kids a brak? i really hope so. i am a good writer and have so many poems and short stories but i really need time to think about it depends on my muse. 25 minutes is just not enough for me to get into something substantial...

I went to a presentation given by harvard, duke, georgetown, and penn. All the colleges said they weren't sure what to do with it yet but that they would regard the math and critical reading scores as parelles to the old math and verbal (this is also what collegeboard suggests). It seems that writing will take a few years to be really important though they will, of course, see it.
