Is it critical to be in the top ten percent of your class for GPA to have a good shot an an Ivy. What if you are in the top twenty percent with excellent SAT’s? And how much consideration is given to the difficulty of your high school?

novice18:

Sorry, I cannot answer your question, but I do have a question that might interest those that want to know the answer to your question...

What if one's high school transcript showed a slight dip (downward trend) between 10th and 11th grade but still managed a respectable rank. I have gotten 2 B's in junior year, but the course work was the most difficult that is offered?

Well novice, it depends on what school you attend

If you attend a normal public school, yes, it is very important

If you attend a top prep school, no, top 10% wouldn't be AS important

Western Mass:

I think it's in between. It's a public school, but probably tops in terms fof competitiveness. Ap course grades jr. year are two As, a B plus and a B.

At Cornell 85% of the Class of 2008 was in the Top 10% of their High School Class - of those students where the HS reported Class Rank.
This link has the % of Students in the top 10% of their Class for Entering Freshmen from Fall 1980 to Fall 2004 ( The Chart lists the stats for each College at Cornell )

And of that 15% not from the top 10% of their class....
Who knows how many are athletes, legacies, minorities, etc.

Western Mass:

I suspect very few minorities, legacies, etc. My school is very competitive in terms of Average SATs, no. going to four year college and APs offeredd, etc. How do the ivies factor all this??
