So, on the boards I hear that the writing section is the easiest to improve upon, and my only blemish was a -5 on the "improving sentences subsection" (I didn't do the essay "correctly" [1 example, barely over one page long] and can definitely net a 12 if I were to take again), and then I hear that grammar is quite easy to learn (past test was my 1st time taking), so I'm wondering if I should retake to boost my score up a bit.

It boils down to how important writing is, wether colleges pay it much heed, and whether the sacrifice of my money/time is worth getting a few extra points on it...

So, disregarding CR and M, should I take the SAT just to improve my writing score?

No. A 710 is a great score.

You missed 5 questions and got a 710? I missed only 3 questions (all "hard") and I got only a 730! You should feel great about a 710!!! What were your other scores?

My other scores were both 800s, but I was just curious as to whether the (purportedly) easily attainable increase would prove significant.

So, I take it that writing isn't to important when compared to the CR + M scores? And that a sure (given that this time around I'll review grammar and know what to do on the essay) increase (however minuscule that 90 points is) would not be worth a retake?

My D got a 710 in writing and 800's in M&CR, she got into Harvard. I guess it can't matter too much.

How can you be complaining about a 1600 math plus reading and a 710 writing?? Lol? Are you crazy? You can get into pretty much any school you want (and I'm assuming that you have a 4.0 GPA, plenty of APs, and a good extracurricular package). And all of them will probably give you scholarships! Just write really good essays and have great recommendations from two-three teachers who really know you.

You have a 1600. That is already good enough.

Most colleges don't look at SAT I Writing. If they do, anything above a 700 is a plus for them.

Writing curves are really harsh. If you get more than 3 wrong usual with an essay score hovering around 9-10, you'll get less than a 700. I thought the June SAT Writing was MUCH easier than all the other tests I have taken.

Concentrate on other areas of your application.

i missed 3 as well, and they were all hard...and i got a 70 MC.
harsh curve, anyone? =p

and congrats on your fabulous scores, which of course, are good enough to get in ANYWHERE

Also keep in mind that the higher your score, the harder it is to improve. Most people who say writing is the easiest section to boost scores have scored in the 600s and are working their way up to the 700s.

Nevertheless, you have a 1600, and I don't think you need to retake it unless you want to.
