How important is your GPA for UF?

OK, so im a Junior in Florida, these are my stats, 1300 SAT and a UF gpa of 3.9, i have seen that all most all students at UF have a 4.0 gpa, so what are my chances of getting in?
I also have friends who are seniors, one had a 4.5 UF gpa and got denied, yet my other friend had a 3.8 and made it?
they had about the same SAT score, so what happened there?

to be honest it comes down to a good balance of grades and what you do out of class, as well as ur essay.

for the record, i got in with a 3.4-3.5 UF GPA, so anything is possible

Tufts syndrome is my guess

Did u do any sports or anything?
also when did u apply? because i has become very competative.

It all depends on who the competition is from your high school. UF can and does only take a certain amount from each high school. If you are in a super competitive (high acheiving type) of high school then your GPA has to be really high for UF unless you are a URM, Athlete, silver knight type, or have some other hook. UF tends (not absolute at all) to take the top 5% of the applicants from a high school PLUS a mix of others who have the above "hooks". I have heard that if you are otherwise very qualified (as you are), UF puts a lot of weight on the essay!

It is preety clear from the incomming class that UF is going after the top 10% points in USNWR rankings.
High GPA in some tough schools does not necessarily transfer into a top 10% standing.
Your friends would have been better off transferring into the closest "less competitive" school to get the top 10% standing.

Yeah the thing is that if i get good grades next year i would have a 3.98 UF gpa, >(
I do think i am top 5 percent though, also im in NHS.
Also does UF take into consideration the kind of classes i took?
because i took all honors (except electives and foreign language), and 6 APs (world history, American, Human Geo, Stats, Enviormental, and Macro eco)
Would it help my chances if I increase my SAT score, this is my first time taking it.

They seem to weight GPA the highest but look at many other criteria. Course rigor is very important especially senior year. My D's UF GPA rounded to 4.0 and she was admitted for Spring but had applied for Summer. Her highest test score was a 25 ACT.

I think many people overlook that any college likes to see a high degree of interest from the applicant. D's application reflected this but we also made 3 campus visits, had an email rapport with an admissions officer and she went to the session when UF visited her school. Also, she applied within the first couple of days the applications went live and her housing priority date was the first day.

Extracurriculars and involvement are also important. I could name many more things she did to compensate for her test scores that gave her an edge.

Thx for the advice, ur daughter is lucky though because the representative from UF told us that if you wanted to get into UF you had to have a 1200-1400 GPA or a 29-34

^to be honest i think they just say that to weed out ppl with lower scores than that from applying

i got a 1200 and a 26, so dont worry, it cant stop u from trying

I know what you mean gpowsang, no matter what im gonna try. Thx for the moral support, really, im not being sarcastic.

I remember when we were at the UCF open house day, the admissions officer giving the speech said "Don't worry about the numbers." If you're committed to a school go for it and give it your all. I think people don't even apply or try hard thinking they won't get in.

Yes, we realize she is very fortunate to get in.

Just to make a comment i wanna say that i created this thread to find out how much harderd i have to try in school, dont worry guys/ladies im style gonna try my hardest to get in. Also there is always FSU, which looks like its going up the ranks when it comes to National Universities.

just get the highest grades u can this year and be sure to have a challenging schedule next year(so that they see u wont slack off) and next year just dont get ANY Fs or Ds, u can get away with a C or two.

This is how UF calculates your GPA. This formula is the "UF GPA." It is only your core and language courses, with weights for honors/AP etc. Recalculate your UF GPA if you have been using a different calculation. http://cyberguidance.net/college/recalgpa.pdf

Is this the formula you have used?

Yeah, i really want to get to UF, i dont think i would slack if i got accepted, ill keep trying my best: you know, just to be sure. If i make into UF it would mean that there is a strong chance i would graduate from a Top 20 University (Since the want to be in the top 20, currently 49th). Also FSU went from 112 to 102, so yeah both are good.
Keep it coming Floridian Education!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thx sunny florida but that is how i checked my gpa, i also asked my councelor to make sure.

Any one know how many teacher recommendations i need?

u can send them, but they wont read tham

but do they at least count them?
do they even matter?

lol i was just saying what UF told me

it pretty much means send them or not, it wont make a diff
