How impressive is an 800 writing score?

Can it carry an app like mine with otherwise above average but not spectacular stats (1300 Math/CR SAT, 2nd decile class rank/94.0 GPA)

No. The adcoms make their decision based on the whole application, not one section of the SATs. And sorry to say this but many colleges are not holding the writing section in utmost importance as it is the first year that this section is on the SAT Reasoning test with no previous records. Hey I know how you feel; I got an 800 in writing too.

me too.
how lame

hopefully my 730 M and 750 CR will sway the adcoms enough...
(in the specific area test scores... i don't know if this post makes sense...)

Well, in terms of the top colleges, stats can never carry an application. Numbers can only qualify you; your essays and accomplishments are what really counts.

Sarah, you shouldn't be worried. Those stats are great.

Yeah, it stinks. I wish I could take the writing/CR scores only; I'd have a freaking 1540. But thanks to my math score, I'm stuck with a 1360. And NYU isn't even looking at writing. I didn't get an 800, but I got a 780 (though if you could combine essay/multiple choice between sittings, I think I would).

I think an 800 ...especially considering the harsh curve...has a small 'wow' factor.....but it'll never carry an application.......

What about a 9 on the essay (definitely not a "wow") and still an 800 (I think I got every multiple choice question correct). Would that just cancel out? Would that just prove that the section is a little strange and cause the score to be discounted...?

wow...9 and still an 800. Curve must've been pretty high. Good job!

what are you talking about? i love the math. 800 baby!

stupid 720 on my writing brought my score down since i have a 1580 MV.

haha i have the same exact scenario.
9 on the essay, perfect on the multiplpe choice, 800 on the section.
looooove it, i'm not complaining! : )

lord asquith... don't fret. we're just amazing. just out of curiousity: when did you take the SAT? i'm curious if we took it the same day...

Haha, I wonder how many others are cool like us! :p

I took the test in October of 2005. It was my second try.

Lol, I got a 12 essay and a 720 Writing =(.

English and Grammar aren't my specialty, which is 2/3rds of the SAT......

Throw in Science and more Math!

Must have had a low curve when I took it. I didn't miss any on then multiple choice and got a 9 on the essay, but got 780 total. Though I did get a 11 on the essay before that round.

aww that's not fair...
I got a 9 on the essay and got 1 MC wrong... 760! no fair :(

94% and only second decile???

800 and 10 on essay.

Even if a college says they're "not considering" the Writing section, I think it's safe to say that they'll notice an 800 and take it into account, if only subconsciously haha.
