How impressive is a 12 on the SAT Writing section? What percentile is that score? Is a 12 common?

Not that impressive.
I think colleges know how badly graded these SAT essays are.
For example, I got a 10 and a 12 and I think they deserved less than an 8. The graders have to evaluate the essays in a matter of seconds (?). So the grade we receive isn't THAT accurate...

Yeah, I know alot of people that have gotten very high scores on the SAT Essay.

BTW, any of yu guys got any good tips?

i got a 12 too so i guess i'm hoping they carry some weight. i would think it would just reaffirm adcom's that you're a strong writer.

A 12 is highly uncommon, as I believe an 11 is supposed to be 99th percentile. Whether that impresses them, I don't know. The whole Writing section is of questionable valdity and the essay seems to be the worst part. I think they are mostly looking at your Writing score so an 800 would be better than a lower score with a 12.

I dont think the essays count towards admissions. I think the score is the only thing colleges will consider....

It's true that a score is all the the adcoms see....but I think that if you got a 12, more than likely your writing score should be high. I think a 10+ is GREAT and should be commended.

I got an 8 and I thought my essay was great. I got a higher score on the ACT essay so I think I got a crappy SAT reader!

I went from a 6 to a 12 =P

I'd have to say my 12 was an exceptional paper though and the 6 sucked. I was sick, in a bad mood, etc.

Our valedictorian put up a 9 on the essay. He got in to Harvard. We also have a kid in the 80th percentile of our class (i.e. worse than 3/4 of our class) who got a 9 on the essay. I do pretty well under pressure normally and am a good test taker (and fairly good writer), and I got an 8 on the essay, and I got into Georgetown and BC Honors. Also, this girl I know who isn't very bright got a 12 on the essay. I think colleges know how randomly graded the SAT essays are.

I get Bs in normal english and got a 5 on the first time i took it, 11 the second, 10 the third, 10 on the fourth. i definitely deserved the 5 though, haha.

I don't know if it's that impressive. I've gotten an 11, a 12, and another 12 the three times I took it. I don't know if I am that great of a writer, but it seems like they don't mind giving out 12's. Of course, I haven't heard of many of my peers getting 12's. Not sure though. I don't think it's that big of a deal personally.

I got a 10, 10, 10. BTW my writing score never went up. and no it was not ridiculously good that it lost its potential to go up. on the contrary, my writing score is RIDICULOUSLY HORRIBLE. I could've had a much higher sat score...

does CB have the percentile for 12 on the essay?

There are estimates for the percentiles given under Educators/Research on the CollegeBoard website. The real percentiles will be out this fall 2006.

I got a 9 on the essay and still managed a 780 on the writing section (perfect 80 on the multiple choice component). I felt that my essay was superb, and far better than the one that my English teacher had graded as a 10. However, my handwriting is terrible, and the scanned version that you can get on your College Board profile makes it virtually unreadable! I'm not sure whether the readers get the hard copy or the scanned version, but I'm pretty sure my handwriting at least partially contributed to my low score. The grading system is also terrible, given that the scorers are given an unreasonably short amount of time to read and grade the papers. My bet is that the writing section will be scrapped within 5 years or so.

I heard that colleges can read your essays that you wrote on the SAT ...

I got a 10 on a practice test essay (they sent it someplace) but 4,5,6, or rarely 7's on essays I wrote in Kaplan, so I don't know how how accurate those are.

I got a 9 on the essay but an 800 on the Writing section, so I have no idea how the essay factors into anything...

I think I'm a fairly strong writer but I gout an 8 and a 7 on my 2 SAT essays. I thought they were both pretty solid. For reference, in AP Lit&Comp when we did timed writes I always scored 7-8/9 on the AP scale and I got a 4/5 on the AP test.
