My parents were really not involved at all. When I applied for college I did the whole applications process by myself. I later told them the colleges I got accepted in and was considering (I left out those I got accepted to and wasn’t considering, so I think to this day they don’t know everywhere I applied).

I just finished my first semester in college and what they DO do is pay for my school and also give me spending money occasionally. I’ve shared my schedule, etc. with my mom but she doesn’t really seem interested. I wish they had played a more active role because it would’ve been easier and less stressful, but that’s life. At least they’re paying (…for now).

My parents basically handed me a credit card and told me to figure out the college admissions process. They would also drive me to wherever I needed to go. They’re now the biggest fans of my university but only remember that I’m some sort of business major (Econ/Finance). I discuss a lot with them in detail, but I’m the one who does the research and is technologically inclined.

I told them where I was applying, and they helped me with the financial aid forms. Once I got my scholarship, I didn’t bother asking them for anything else other than application fees. They pay the thousand or so dollars that aren’t covered by scholarship and told me to get a job to cover personal expenses. I didn’t expect them to help me at all with personal expenses because they didn’t when I was home. I call them maybe once every other week when I am at school. Really, they aren’t in my life at all while I’m at school.

This forum appears to be filled with the independent kids who did everything themselves. I imagine that the parents forum is the opposite.

Well I would imagine this thread would attract more people who’ve done everything themselves as a sort of self-selection bias.

However, most people in general do have some degree of parental help. I’ve personally done it all myself (research, fee payments, covering tuition, blahblah).
