I was just accepted to the school (no honors or CPS, though) and was wondering how there need based aid is. Is it different for OOS students than in-state? How much do they generally offer (That's a vague question a guess)? When do they announce scholarships and stuff like that?

They always say send it in whether you know or not because you I was told that you can’t even be considered for merit aid without that info. I say turn it in. W/o parent drama, it takes an forty-five minutes to an hour tops.

Does anyone know roughly how many of the kids accepted to the Honors College usually get Merit Aid? Just a few, around half, or the majority? Thanks.

I just called UMD and confirmed that you do not need to file FAFSA for straight Merit Based scholarships. You only have to do the FAFSA for need based scholarships and aid.

Honors typically will have many students on Merit, think about it logically, the school has so much as stated these are the top of the top, thus, Merit would make sense to appeal to them. There are several kids/parents on this site that chose UMDCP over Ivies based on the merit they received. B/K being the most popular.

^^^ Last year DD’s class, ALL of her friends (herself included) who were offered to Honors College, received merit scholarship ranging from 4K – 8K per year for 4 years, one made it to B/K and got full ride.

Unfortunately even IS with 8K is still a healthy chunk coming from out of pocket. If I recall correctly they also top out for freshman with Stafford Loans at 5500. Add the 2 of them together and you will still be using TERP PAYMENT PLAN.

GO ROTC is about the only way around the cost. :)
