I applied to GT, and I just want to learn more about the surroundings.

The weather’s pretty comfortable. For half of the fall and spring semesters, if it’s hot, I just wear t-shirts and shorts. For the other halves, I wear jeans and if it gets really cold, a light jacket or fleece. You should never have a case of “argh, no matter what I wear, I can’t get comfortable!”

On a scale of 1-10, I’d rate the people at a 7. Many students are shy but very few are downright cold. If you initiate small talk, most will respond favorably. And, chances are, you’ll be able to find a set of friends here who share your interests.

I don’t enjoy parties as I don’t see the point of drinking to get drunk. (Drinking to complement food is another story.) So, I think there are others here who could give you better answers to three and four. Still, I can tell you that about one-fourth of the campus is involved with Greek Life, so if you want a good social life, there are plenty of others who do, as well. Of course, the Greeks don’t have a monopoly on social life; there are many other student organizations that cater to a myriad of interests. As for night life, Georgia Tech is effectively in downtown Atlanta, so with transportation, you can easily go clubbin’ if that’s your thing, and almost all big name performers stop by for their live shows.

I’m in my third year, and I’ve been really happy here. I definitely recommend stopping by, even if you’re from California.

I had the misfortune of walking through the walkway between Love and the Manufacturing building. It’s a natural wind tunnel, and let me tell you tropical storm force winds when the high is 30 cannot possibly ever be comfortable.

You will probably like the weather less than Cali’s. It’s overcast a lot more.

Probably hands-down some of the nicest people you’ll find on a campus. Just not always extroverted.

On campus, not so great, but between State, Emory and Tech you can have a good time.

Wouldn’t know too much since my night life is parties, working in the lab, and shuttling between the two :P.

Oh not bad, but does it get rainy and cloudy in the winters? We lived in London for a bit and even though it hardly ever snowed it was so wet and windy and gloomy!

Not a fan of Atlanta, but have heard that there are a lot more guys than girls on Tech’s campus. In other words, if you’re looking to meet a girl, Tech is not the place to go.

Montegut: you’ve heard that? Not very strong evidence. There are several thousand women in the GT undergrad population. Plenty of GT guys meet their wives who are GT students.

"In other words, if you’re looking to meet a girl, Tech is not the place to go. "

Ga State which has 60% its students who are girls is only 1.5 miles away.

Incoming ga tech freshman has largest female student at 33%, that’s recording for Ga Tech. Hopefully, in the near future, Ga Tech will have close to 40% female student.

Also, here is excellent article about women in Ga Tech in the today’s ajc. Women at Ga tech held 42% of leadership role.

It’s usually 60-70 during the fall term. It gets lower during the winter.

People here lean toward being “mean”. A lot of Georgians stay in their own group of friends and aren’t that receptive to you if you are from out of state. Not everyone fits that description though.
Basically, you have to be active in making friends.

Depends on your workload and interests.

GT isn’t in the “real” downtown Atlanta. If you want to go there, you have to take a bus. During the weekdays almost no-one I know goes partying being and because of studying and because of the distance.

What? You need to meet some new people. The majority of campus goes out on weekends - usually to either Buckhead or the Highlands. The “real” downtown is a boring place. Tech is located pretty well with quick MARTA access to both areas, plus Atlantic Station and Peachtree.

If there are people that “don’t have fun” or “don’t go out” at Tech, it’s because they have issues, not because of the school or the city. That type of person would be bored at any college - they expect “fun” to come knock on their door. It’s the same type of person that complains that he can’t meet women at Tech.

Atlanta is located in Midtown business district, the nice part of Atlanta. Ga State is located in downtown Atlanta which is not nearly as nice.

There are a lot of activities to do if students have time and money. There always football game every other Saturday. Of course there is always event in DramaTech. I always enjoyed college of computing guest series (Microsoft VP, Intel VP, etc) when I was at Tech.

Fox Theatre and High museum of Art are very close by. Atlantic station (center of yippie Atlanta) is about one miles north and there always something over there (like taste of atlanta, beach volleyball, summer concert, etc). Piedmont Park is also close by. Lenox Mall and Philip Plaza, the fashion capital of Southeast. There is small Chinatown in Chamblee. All can be get from MARTA. Of course, it is nice to have car in Atlanta to get those places. Atlanta is not walkable city. Also, city living is expensive and it is always nice to have some extra money.

I can sympathy with atreen. So if money is tight and it is cheaper to go your in-state college, that’s maybe the way to go. Michigan state, although not as good as Ga Tech, is still fine school for engineering.
