How is Berkeley Philosophy?

How hard is the berkeley philosophy major?

Also,

How hard is the statistics major?

Both are pretty hard majors.

I hear philosophy is fairly tough, as in tough to excel, but you can get by if you need to. Keep in mind that philosophy is associated with logic, which Berkeley is world class at, so I’m sure you can meet some hardcore students into logic.

My impression is you’ll have a fair number of essays, where they’ll expect a good bit from you in terms of thoughtfulness and clarity. I don’t know philosophy majors, but I know some with some coursework.

How would double majoring in Philosophy and statistics?

Of what double major would go well with philosophy?

^ German, French, Classics–it depends on what sort of philosophy you’re studying.

I took a philosophy class this semester (phil 3) and my GSI said that it’s one of the toughest majors and the average grade is about a B-

Was the average grade in Phil 3 a B-?

I’m not sure. Probably not too different from that I think. It was funny, earlier in the semester after we all turned in our first papers, the GSI made copies of an example paper from one of the students to show us a well-written paper. That paper received an A-. I was like, really? You don’t have an A paper to show us? Wow.

The professors tend to be okay to good. The GSIs vary from eh to good. The grading is pretty tough. You can work hard and get a B. Few As are given, some A-s. The classes are, in general, too big for my tastes.

You will have to read a lot of dense material, ideally rereading it. You will have to write a lot, too. Not as much as some majors, but it will be more dense and difficult.

If you really excel, the professors and graduate seminars are there to take you to the highest levels. The top applicants get into the top programs for philosophy every year.
