HI CC!
I did Nevada Boys State this summer and was wondering what colleges think of the program (Specifically USC, UCLA, UC Berkeley). I heard some (such as UCLA) regard it as a great accomplishment. I was elected to be an assemblyman and had a blast there, I recommend it for all high school juniors!
Thanks!

Hi there!

I’ve always thought of Boys/Girls State as pretty prestigious because several top students from my HS have gone in the past. And alumni of the program tend to get into good schools (although this is probably correlation, not causation).

I’m not exactly sure what you guys do, but I vaguely know it revolves around elections and assemblies and the like. So if your EC’s are in line with governmental-type stuff, I think it would help, and even if they’re not it’s still a great program to have taken part in.

It would be helpful to know your GPA and SAT with regards to Berkeley, UCLA, etc since at the end of the day they’re still fairly focused on numbers.

Best of luck!

I went to Boys State and it is definitely helpful for your application. Obviously, the more you got involved in different things the better you would look. I wish I had run for one of the “Big 3” (Gov., Lt. Gov., and Attorney General) or run for Boys Nation, but I was also the equivalent of an assemblyman in my state and I had a blast as well. While it may not necessarily put you above someone with significantly better GPA and test scores, think about the fact that at big schools like the ones you listed, there are many applicants that may have generally the same credentials that you do, and Boys State will undoubtedly make you stand out. I’m hoping the same for myself. Good luck to you!

I did Girls State and then Girls Nation. It was a lot of fun - but it also made me realize I didn’t want to go to an Ivy League school. The people I met at Girls Nation who I liked the least were the ones most obsessed with prestige and going to Ivies.

But as to your question: I think it’s a nice thing to have on your application, but I think the extent varies. Some states have very small programs, while others are quite large (Wisconsin’s is about 1200, I think.) If you get elected to a top position or to Boys Nation, that will really stand out, I think. (2 of the 4 Boys/Girls Nation delegates from my state ended up at Yale.)

The service academies love Boys State. I don’t know how other schools feel about it.

Maybe it depends on the state? The selection process? I hear you about the correlation between Boys State and top colleges, but it may will be a correlation: the kids that chosen are the kind of kids who get accepted.

I see, my GPA is 3.6 and my ACT is 32. does Boy’s State bump up my chances?

Although I don’t know anything about Boys State, I can tell you that those numbers are decently competitive. The GPA is a little low, but the ACT is better than average. Overall, your stats are decent, so any significant extracurriculars, which Boys State certainly sounds like, will make you stand out a bit. Your chances will vary greatly based on which UC campus you apply to, however.
