I was looking at CCNY, and plan on majoring in physics. While I was looking online, I got the feeling that CCNY is for mostly for New York students. Would I be one of the few out of state students? Is CCNY just a glorified community college? I am currently living in Pittsburgh.
The cuny schools are generally known as commuter school and serve residents of the 5 boroughs. A lot of the students are non traditional and/or first generation immigrants. That being said the classes and professors are pretty decent and the price is cheap. If you live in new york already, it is a great value.
CCNY now has dorms
CCNY has dorms and a new state of the art science center
In no way is it a “glorified community college.” CCNY and all of the senior colleges of CUNY are excellent colleges.
My son transferred from a different CUNY 4 year campus. Yes some CUNY colleges have a dorm, but a very tiny percentage of students live in those dorms. Most of your classmates will commute home after class, and you’ll never see some of them outside school. The physical buildings are old. He had some good professors, some bad ones, like most colleges. Biggest issues with CUNY are cost of living in NYC is very high, and in your case you would have to pay out of state tuition as well.
All that said, as an adult employer, I would recruit graduates of CCNY with tech degrees.
You just may or may not love being a student there for 4 years. If you come to the northeast to visit colleges,
take a look.
