Do pre-meds tend to avoid ChemE or is there a decent amount? I'm not interested in medicine as much as energy and fuel. Materials science is a possibility too. Would the JHU ChemE program be good for this?

I’m not a ChemBE but I know a lot of people who are. While this is probably not true for the majority, most of the ChemBE majors I have met are people who didn’t get into BME. For ChemBE, I think you can take the path you’re interested in (energy, fuel, etc) or biomolecular stuff. My guess is that most people in the ChemBE program are going down the biomolecular route but that isn’t to say that the energy and fuel pathway isn’t equally good. In fact, you may even have smaller class sizes and get more time with professors. If you’re looking for a really good chemical engineering education though, look into University of Minnesotta. Their program is consistently ranked around UC Berkeley, MIT and Caltech.

I got kind of off track but to answer your first question, I have not met that many premeds who are doing ChemBE but that goes with BME as well.

Thanks daivikio! anyone else have an opinion?
