I have a DD and DS that are applying to UMN and both have 4.0 UW GPA. They have both been in Honors classes throughout HS and have had 2 AP (Bio and Lang; DS also had AP Gym) classes through 11 grade.
Currently they are 1 of 543 UW GPA, DS is 18 and DD is 24 on W GPA.
I am asking to see if they will have a chance to get into the Honors College. Both are 4 year HS athletes; DD - Tennis, DS - Wrestling and significant ECs.
Absolutely, though honors varies based on what college they are in. Locks for CLA; extremely likely for CSE, CBS or CSOM as well (though ACT / SAT scores are factored in as well- I’m assuming they have test scores commensurate with those grades).
Saw elsewhere the test scores for the twins. DS is near lock, I’d say. DD less so, but just slightly, depending on her college of choice.
@khidhala DS had a 32 and DD had a 30. Both first attempt. They are taking again in September. Both are applying to CSE.
Was reading about Honors Colleges today on Forbes site and determined they are very beneficial especially for engineering found out UMN is highly ranked. Also found out Alabama is highly ranked.
The smaller class sizes are very beneficial.
I am speaking as a former engineering undergrad in the Stone Age. Smaller classes in the initial Chemistry and Physics classes would have been very beneficial to be able to ask more questions if something is not understood completely. They did not offer these types of classes in the Dark Ages. :))
It is a different experience from when I was a student as well.
CSE is the most discerning college for Honors admission. I know you like profile numbers, so I’ll point you to http://admissions.tc.umn.edu/PDFs/15-16_Fresh_Appeal_UHP.pdf (in case you haven’t found it already). This will give you a profile of typical admissions into Honors, and you’ll see that typical (50%) ACT scores for CSE are in the 34-35 range, and class rank is 99%.
One important aspect about Minnesota’s CSE classes you may already be aware of… Honors sections aside, the college does reserve a number of sections for intro level coursework (like Physics, Calc and Chem) for students in their college. Class size may be larger than honors, but their classmates will be sci/techies as well.
Good luck!
@khidhala Thanks. I saw the profile numbers and that is why asked how class rank is determined. The school my kids go to has many kids taking bunches of AP classes which push them up the Weighted GPA rankings. I guess straight A’s in HS are not good enough anymore unless you are almost all AP classes.
One girl actually skipped lunch to take an extra AP course because her goal is to go to Harvard.
I think the chance is small for them, unfortunately. That may very well sway me to go to a different school. I will let you know what happens.
Thanks for your insight!
