Are there any CMU students out there who have taken Arabic at CMU? I'm interested in international studies, so I'm not your typical science/math major. I will be visiting CMU soon and am wondering about traditional liberal arts courses at CMU. I'm looking for an urban university, and I like Pittsburgh, so CMU is definitely on my list of universities to visit.

We have pretty good international relations & humanities programs, but Arabic is not among the languages offered at CMU. Luckily Pitt’s language department is excellent and they’re down the street, so you could take all the Arabic you wanted there. We also have a secondary campus in Doha, Qatar, where a lot of students study abroad - so you could theoretically go there for immersion if you wanted.

CMU offers Arabic 1, 2 and Advanced Arabic classes.

82-112, 82-212, 82-312 and 82-448 (culture)

It’s in the “modern languages” department.

The only obvious glaring omissions from foreign languages at CMU are Swahili and Hebrew.

They offer, chinese, japanese, the romance languages, russian and arabic.

FYI 82-312 and 448 are being offered on the Qatar campus, not Pittsburgh.

Whoa, we -do- have basic Arabic. Cool. Apparently no degree though? I’ve never known anyone who took it outside of Qatar, I wonder how it is.

311 and 312 were taught in the fall in Pittsburgh.

Thanks for all the advice. It’s good to know that Arabic is taught at CMU, and the program in Doha sounds very interesting. I don’t plan to major in Arabic; I would like to develop Arabic language skills while pursuing a degree in some sort of international studies program, however. (I’ll be taking Arabic at Middlebury in the summers, as well). Doha sounds like a great opportunity. And I really like Pittsburgh. Thanks everyone!
