How is Comp Sci MS program at UIUC?

I am currently doing my BS at the Chicago campus of U of I. I am thinking I can finish the MS program in one year with transfer credit. Will they count undergrad courses as transfer for some of the requirements for MS?

Also UIUC said they only look at your junior year grades when determining GPA, so does that mean if my GPA freshman and soph years sucked I will be okay? B/c my junior year GPA is pretty high...much higher than my first 2 years.

I only want to get the MS b/c it will help open doors and get jobs at places like Goldman Sachs. After working 2yrs I would like to get an MBA from UChicago or Wharton.

I talked with the person who is in charged of UIUC CS Graduate program a few months ago, she said that the program is very competitive to get in. Last year 1200 students applied and 70-80 got accepted. (That includes PHD and MS Combined). I am not sure how high the gpa should be but she said the average GPA was 3.7-3.8. (But obviously, PHD students pulled the average up because PHD admission is much harder)…However if you get in, your door is open to every leading technology companies!

“Also UIUC said they only look at your junior year grades when determining GPA”

I’ve never heard of this. Can anyone confirm it? Is it only true for CS?

i also doubt getting into goldman sachs would be easy with UIC and UIUC degrees. neither place is a target.

Goldman Sachs was at the UIUC/UIC Engineering job far a few months ago…

I go to UIUC and interviewed with Goldman Sachs (as an EE)–it was not a walk in the park. UIUC’s CS students are in general, highly sought after, however. When Bill Gates came here two years ago, he stated that Microsoft hires more CS graduates from UIUC than any other university.
