Hi, I am deciding between McGill and a few other schools and I was wondering how the CS program is (under faculty of science). I heard they are having expansion issues, the class sizes are huge, and a lot of the profs are bad. Is this true?
Did you hear all this from a McGill CS student of someone who heard it from someone who heard it from someone else. Virtually all CS departments are expanding to meet demand. Montreal is a major hub for AI these days. What are your other alternatives?
What are your other options? If you’ve got UofT or Waterloo in your pocket, seriously consider one of those.
My son has friends in CS at McGill and they quite like it FWIW.
Profs are hit and miss at any school, in any discipline. And you can imagine that the average CS prof (much like the average Math prof) is probably not the best orator. I say average because there can certainly be some dynamite ones.
I would echo @TomSrOfBoston thoughts. What other schools are you comparing it to? U of T CS is a second year admit, as are many schools these days. UBC, Wisconsin, Washington are all second year CS admits.
