How is CSU?

To anyone who attends, what is the campus like? I'm just interested to know.

My daughter and I will be visiting CSU in mid-April. We'll let you know what we think when we get back. Our communications with CSU's reps so far have been very pleasant and helpful. I have a friend who is a CSU alum and she loved it there.

gbesq-We would love to hear your impressions when you return. S is considering CSU and we may try to visit this coming summer/fall. Have a great trip.

This has nothing to do with anything except for the forum... but I'm somewhat new to the site. What does it mean when people use 'S' and 'D'?

Welcome, this site has great information. S and D stand for Son and Daughter. H and W are Husband and Wife.

parents on here is kind of a wierd deal. anyway, i go to boarding school inbetween boulder and ft. collins and i must say, CSU and it's surrounding town is way more appealing than CU and boulder, regardless i gotta get the hell outta this state.

Well, my daughter and I have returned from our tour of prospective colleges and are sad to report that we were disappointed with CSU. To be fair, I should begin by saying that Fort Collins and the surrounding area are beautiful . . . great town, lots to do, the snow-capped Rocky Mountains in the background, 300+ days of sunshine annually, etc. As for the university, my daughter took an almost immediate dislike to the look of the campus . . . lots of concrete, modern architecture, wide expanses of lawn with very little ornamental landscaping -- kind of cold and austere, almost a complete opposite of the older, more ornate "traditional" campuses that we previously visited at the University of Missouri -Columbia and Kansas State University. The undergraduate admissions presentation was fair, at best. We sat and listened to an admissions counselor for nearly an hour as she essentially read from the 36 page undergraduate viewbook. During the middle of the presentation, a freight train came through the middle of the campus (more about this below) and was loud enough so that we couldn't hear part of the admissions presentation. As strange as this may seem, the train tracks -- which run right through the middle of the campus -- were there long before the university and are still in use -- several trains come through daily from what we were told. Following the admissions presentation, we were taken on a tour by a student who I would have to charitably describe as uninformed and disinterested (didn't know the names of many of the buildings on campus and couldn't answer some of our most basic questions). I noticed during the course of the tour that we were taken by the exteriors of many of the buildings, but went inside only a few), which leads me to speculate that many campus facilities were probably in need of repair or upgrading. Those that we did see were not impressive -- the dorms, in particular, were dreadful. My daughter was impressed with the equine facilities (which are among the best that I've seen anywhere) and the School of Veterinary Medicine, but on the whole, she was far more impressed with the campuses, facilities, student body and the way that she was treated at Mizzou and K-State than at CSU. To be fair, I'm sure that CSU is a great school and a perfect choice for many students, but it wasn't a good fit for my daughter and I think she'll be happier elsewhere.

The Zoology Department at Colorado State is reportedly very good. Better biological sciences than CU-Boulder.

yeah, CSU has like a top-ten vet school. theyre especially known for their larger-animal stuff

there always seems to be some hatred between cu and csu.

Bump. Anyone have anything to add?

CU is our rival! haha.

CU and CSU are two great and completely different schools. Ft. Collins is more of a family town and Boulder is more of an artsy community. The buildings at CSU as well as CU are modern inside except for a few. I really think it depends on what you want to study also because both have programs that the other one doesn't .

Sons were not impressed with CSU either. Colorado schools are struggling with funding and student reports of large classes and a lot of TAs teaching classes were troubling. Campus seemed to be broken up to us. Fort Collins is very nice.

My daughter is about to graduate from CSU and has loved it. She only had one TA in 3 yrs. there. She went to CU first and loved it but they did not have a good art department and she is studying graphic design and merchandising which they don't offer at CU. I have 4 kids and all went to different schools. They all were looking for something else so looking for a school can be very tricky. I have found it is best to listen to what they like. Maybe sit down and make a list of pros and cons of all schools. Also if they keep their grades up this doesn't have to be a life decision if they don't like it they can always transfer.

Colorado State University is an amazing school!!! Students report the academics are consistently under-rated by the traditional college rankings. Their robotics team just came in third in the WORLD. Their engineering is rated way up in the rankings (very close in rank to Dartmouth). The vet med is always number one or number two in the country. All the sciences are strong. They also have strong exercise physiology, food science and nutrition, speech therapy, etc. etc. and even their business school was recently given rave reviews. Add to the fact the students are healthy, active, friendly and Fort Collins is a great town. Oh, and it's a best buy school, too. Why would you want to pay more to get less elsewhere?

Here's an article on how highly rated CSU is! My sister goes and it's such a good school!

CSU rocks. Great campus, great classes, great friends. The professors care about you and it's not competitive, your friends work with you. I transferred from a very well known school and I'm glad I did. CSU is definitely better in every way.

Now I think I'm going to apply to CSU, lol! Thanks CC!

Bumping up for hopefully more info.
