Does Duke give out a lot of FA to its internationals? I've heard that Duke is quite generous but some people with higher incomes got disappointed.

I believe the aid given for foreign students is pretty comparable to U.S. applicants, BUT it is much harder to get admitted in the first place if you’re applying for aid as it’s a separate pool (since international students don’t qualify for federal gov’t aid). Here’s more information:
[Duke Financial Aid: International Students](http://dukefinancialaid.duke.edu/undergraduate/prospectives/apply/international.html)

If you don’t apply for aid from the onset, you cannot apply later in your Duke career.

This is also interesting:

Bruce and Martha Karsh have donated a lot of money in recent years to improve Duke’s aid for international students, including endowing the Karsh International Scholars program.

“I’ve heard that Duke is quite generous but some people with higher incomes got disappointed.”

Duke’s financial aid is need based. So it’s very much possible that the “people with higher incomes” didn’t get much of it because it is need based and higher income almost definitely means less need! :)

The best shot that these people with higher income have at reducing the cost of attendance is to aim for the merit scholarships…but those are even harder to get…

From my limited understanding, Duke financial aid will meet need of international students, but admits a very, very, very limited number of international students who need aid. Again, with higher incomes, even with fluctuations in cost of living, they will expect more than many incomes may be able to pay.
