I'm pretty interested in this school, tempted to apply and go through the process. Generally how experienced do the musicians have to be to get selected? I have a LOT of experience but certainly am not professional level. Just want to see what's the applicant pool like.

Any info on Eastman is greatly appreciated..

From what I've heard, Eastman's school of music is pretty competitive... I suppose it might depend on the instrument, though, but I'm not really sure. The "LOT of experience" part seems like it would come in handy! My suggestion: If you're anywhere in the area, I wonder if it would be possible to schedule a lesson with the professor of your instrument. Most professors are quite willing to do this, from my experience, and you could ask them questions or just see what kind of level they're looking for that way.

It's pretty prestigious, probably one of, it not, the best music schools in the nation and has a nice atmosphere around it. (I took flute/violin lessons there; you get your own little card which you need to get into the lesson rooms)
It is in the city though, so it's urban :\
As for applying, I'm not that sure... one of my best friends goes there for violin (also takes courses at UofR; they have some dual-enrollment stuff that I'm not particularly familiar with), and she finished Suzuki: Book 10 by age 12. Not what sure your instrument is or what type of experience you have, but it's not like I had a lot of insight to begin with. ^^;
Hope that helps :D

Students at UR (non-Eastman) who play in river campus ensembles get to take private lessons at the Eastman school at no charge. Pretty good deal!
No need to be a music major--just prove to the conductor that you are an intermediate player.

If you feel you are not playing at an extremely HIGH level then you probably shouldn't bother. Applying and auditioning to conservatory is a huge deal and is unbelievably competitive.

You might be better off focusing on colleges with strong music programs, but not conservatories. There's lots of them out there! :)

Eastman is ranked right up there with Juilliard (and many musicians say it's better, and would be more well-known to the general public if it were in NYC like Juilliard is). If you don't think you're at Juilliard's level, don't bother with Eastman.
