How is Emory's financial aid for international students?

I'm a korean citizen looking into applying to Emory University this Fall.
How is the financial aid? The tuition and other fees seem gargantuan and my family only makes around 30,000USD/year.
They told me not to worry and that they will work it out with bank loans, but I still want to know what the FA for internationals is like.

Like many top private schools, pretty bad. If your stats are high enough and you have an interesting enough EC history or story to tell, I would certainly go for Emory Scholars if you were truly interested in Emory. Most Koreans (and international students in general) who apply here are pretty wealthy and can put down all of the funds up front for the semester. I think, having high need (despite many top schools claiming main being need blind) if you are an international student may actually decrease chances of admission at many top schools. I don’t know if it is how Emory works, but it could be a possibility (if the pool of applicants from abroad who can pay sticker is so high, they may be reluctant to admit those who can’t).Hmmmm…let’s see

Yep, Emory is one of those schools that selects only a select few for need based aid (like Chicago for example): <a href=“International Applicants | Emory University | Atlanta GA”>http://apply.emory.edu/apply/international.php</a></p>

If your stats are really good, please apply for the Scholars program. It’s possible that you may be good enough to be one of those folks selected, but if it is anything like how it works at Chicago, chances may be lower than being selected as a Scholar. As much as I would like you to be able to come if you are interested, I am just being honest here. It is what the website says.

You should also apply to the Oxford Scholars program at Emory’s Oxford College (you can apply to both programs). It will be easier for you to compete for aid there and the program is about 10k less expensive per year than the Atlanta campus.

@bernie12‌ thank you for your advice. I’m planning to do ED 1 for Emory actually and the Scholars Program seems like a good idea. What other ways to mitigate the financial burden are there besides the aid that the college itself provides?

Seek outside scholarships that are open to non-US citizens if you have any special talents, skills, or involvement. That’s all I can think of and I do not know any off the top of my head.

I suspect you will run into problems with financial aid. The secret truth is the growth of international students in the US has little to do with diversity. It’s about rankings and revenue. The COA has grown to a point that universities now need to expand their search of “well funded high test scoring” students outside the US. Universities like the idea of spreading their brand overseas and like the increase in applications and improved selectivity as well. Both private and state universities now aggressive recruit overseas but they offer little in FA. For international students “need blind” means you need not apply unless you can pay the full COA. Many universities also add an international student surcharge to their fees as well.
