How is the financial aid at SU?
Do they give grants?
I know for fresh man the loans can not exceed 5,550 and it increases each year…right???
How can one afford this school?
I am hoping to get a decent FA offer.
anyone??
I got accepted as a freshman for this coming fall and they gave me loans for up to 7.5k, around 46k in grants, 3k in work study, and rest is 4k is expected family contribution
idk if that’s good or not
@momentose. that looks great! congrats:-)
what was your fafsa efc?
Also did u apply ED or RD?
you think so?:o
EFC was $2737 and applied RD
@momentose you should be very grateful. how do you not think that isnt amazing. there are people paying 60K a year to attend this school and you get to go for almost nothing
Yup @tangerinejade my thoughts exactly!!!
I received $12,000 for my grades, (founders scholarship), and $23,000 as an institution grant. I also got $3,200 in work study, and some loans. My cost for Syracuse is $19,000 a year, my EFC on the Fafsa was $15,000 so I’d say their financial aid is fantastic. They meet 96% of your need (for most students) and it is by far the best package I received from any college… Considering American Univ gave me $4,000 for the whole year! (Ridiculous, right?)
My son received $12,000 Founders Scholarship and loans. Our EFC on the FAFSA was just under 38,000, but on the financial aid pages on MySlice our contribution is listed as almost $85,000! That’s more than the cost of attendance. Phone call to financial aid counselor was completely useless–the counselor was rude, impatient, and proceeded to list off every dollar we entered on our CSS profile. He told me they don’t use the FAFSA at all. Congrats to everyone who got their need met–clearly we didn’t.
@KTeach I am in a similar situation. The FAFSA estimated my EFC to be about 40,000 a year. But on the Syracuse My Slice, my EFC is 54,000.
Does anybody know why my npc differs so greatly from the actual financial aid that I’ve been awarded?
It might have to do with my income bracket but i am unsure if this is normal or not
The CSS profile asks for different information than the FAFSA and it’s been my experience (with my two older children) that it always gives a higher estimated contribution. However, I’ve never had the CSS profile say we could afford more than twice as much as the FAFSA, and I’ve never had a university list my EFC as more than the cost of attendance! I’m sure if you call, one of the financial aid counselors will happily explain how much the CSS profile says you can afford-and tell you that they don’t use the FAFSA at all.
Financial aid is fairly decent. However, my EFC on the FAFSA was 0 and SU calculated my EFC as $6500. That’s a huge difference.
I encourage you that if you get a skimpy deal, like I did (an initial offer of 15% of all expenses!!), there is ALWAYS room to negotiate with a non-profit private college! They have the money, you just have to know where and how to get it.
My advice:
1.) visit the college in person
2.) get connected with a Dean so they can put a good word in
3.) annoy the heck out the Financial Aid Office, they’ll eventually budge
4.) have good reasons: both my parents make > $100,000, however, when you factor in house mortgage, medical bills (my mom has MS), other college payments (my sister goes to a private college for $25,000 per year, and contributions to our grandparents, we would not be able to afford even one year at Syracuse. State your reasons, list the facts, and provide evidence, sound credible, and don’t be hesitant to express your love for the school!!
In the end, my financial aid package now covers: 50% of my expenses
Praise the Lord!
