How is FSU engineering?

Yes, I know UF is the best. But I didn't apply there. I also got into UCF, but I don't really want to go there. What I am looking for are comments about FSU's engineering program, preferably first hand, rankings are cool and everything, but I'd like to know more about placement, salary, rigor, etc. I visited it already, and liked it, but I didn't have a chance to ask those kind of questions.

Also, I'd like to know the viability of transferring to UF, and to a lesser extent UCF, after 2 years, so long as I keep my grades up of course, should the need arise.

I don’t know anything about FSU’s engineering program…but I’ve heard that most pick UCF over FSU for engineering, but only engineering…

That seems to be the general consensus. I am still not entirely sure I want to be an engineer, although that’s my declared major, which is why I don’t think UCF is the best choice.

Well what other majors are you considering ? It might be good to good to just go to whichever one has classes/programs in everything you’re considering, and transfer later if you decide on one that the other excels in.

But… I think some universities only accept CC transfers, so you might want to check their transfer policies.

The difference in engineering between FSU and UCF is likely not worth mentioning. The last rating I saw had UCF at something like 86 and FSU at 92.

Was actually in your same exact shoes last year.

Now that you’re a year in, how do you like the engineering program? Did you end up changing your major?

Haha I’m not going into an engineering field by any means. Just curious. All the guys in my class are UF chemical engineering all the way.

So far thru my freshman year I have only had to take a one credit engineering lab class.
No real engineering required yet.
Too early to tell if I will stay in the program. It really does not start to pick up untill Spring sophomore year.
STILL glad I did not go to UCF though.

CSBelina: I think reputation depends partly on the type of engineering studied. THere is a world of difference between mechanical/aero and electrical. My husband, who hires aerospace engineers noted that FSU aerospace engineering simply has no reputation at all in Orlando. This differs from some schools such as UF or Georgia Tech, which have very good reputations and other schools with poor aerospace reputations. When he receives a resume, the first thing he looks at is GPA. He will not even read a resume from a school with a poor reputation unless GPA is over 3.5 (tough to achieve in engineering). However, he will look at a UF or GT resume as long as the GPA is over 3.0. He does not receive FSU resumes, so he hasn’t developed his cut-off, but he speculates that the cutoff would probably be somewhere between the two (ok - he has a son at FSU, so that could actually help a resume from there). He noted that the FSU physics department is so well respected that it is likely to give a boost to the reputation of the engineering department.

I know that this doesn’t exactly answer your questions, but it can help quantify the practical difference between applications from two schools.
