I am an international from India, i dont know how GPA's are caculated .
I am going to college in the USA this summer, and dont know how to caculate a GPA.
Back here in India we use the 100 mark system. hence my ignorance towards the GPA system. please help

Simplified, in the US an A = 4, a B=3, a C=2, a D=1 (as the chart shows many use + and - grades which puts grades between those four). For a total GPA you divide the addition of all your semester grades by total number of semester crdeits. Easy example, Assume you had 8 semesters of math in high school all A's, 8X4=32; assume you had 8 semesters of science all B's, 8X3= 24. Total GPA if those were all the courses you had = 3.5 (32 + 24= 56, divided by 16, the number of semester credits for all courses combined). Just do that for all courses you have had.

At the college level, it is similar except you get more than 1 credit per course per semester. For example, your math in any semester may be a 3 credit hour course (meaning, usually you go 3 times a week). Example, you have 15 semester credit hours, 5 courses where you go 3 hours a week to each. In three of those courses you end with an A, the other two a B, GPA= 4X9 (the 3 A courses), plus 3X6 (the two B courses), and divide total reached by 15. Total GPA is 3.6 for the semester.

no no now just a second. i understood the school part, the college part got confusing

"At the college level, it is similar except you get more than 1 credit per course per semester"
exactly what does that mean?

now i really dont understnad. lets say i take four courses in my first semester. and lets say i get an A on 2, and a B on two.
now my GPA would be, 4X2 + 3X2=14, 14/4=3.6?
so my GPA is 3.6 for the first semster...sorry but i dint get the extra credit thing per course per semester.
what is a credit? i am sorry i have to ask such prelimnary questions, but i really need some help on this.

You get a "Credit" for going to class. Usually it's 3 credits. Labs are generally one credit. This various at some schools. Each credit is for every one academic hour that you spend IN lecture/class. If you have class from 8 to 8:50 three times a week, thats 3 credits. Labs may be 3 or more hours but you'll still only get one credit most places. If you meet for 1.5 hour on TR (R=Thursday), you'll get 3 credits.

Say your 4 classes are all 3 credits and you get 2 A's and 2 B's.

The number of credit hours given depends on the number of hours the class meets a week.

All my classes (MWF and TH) are 3 credit hours next year except for my MTHF English 101 class which will be 4 credit hours, and my two PE classes will be 1 credit hour each.

You don't HAVE to attend every class to get credit. A lot of classes don't take attendance, especially in large lecture halls. You could only show up on exam days and still get all of the credits for the course (if you pass).
