Hey guys im getting ready to apply to schools since its that time of the season (sort of). I have alot of GE classes at my CC and have fulfilled a good amount of the requirements, while having 35 units atm and 50 after this semester. I wanted to ask as to how Hawaii's school life is and how is the party scene? ive been to hawaii before (Maui) and i thought it was nice and really relaxed. There was also a good amount of chicks that looked good.

Any feedback is appreciated. My major will be psychology or japanese, however i plan to take science courses on the side because i "believe" i want to be a doctor one day. I also like the idea of studying abroad in like Japan or somethin.

Btw if theres any other schools you would consider in general for me to look at as far as schools that are really good but overlooked and are not crazy hard to get into.

The ‘chicks’ might look good but have you put in the work to look good to them? I jest.

UH Manoa and UH Hilo are the 2 obvious ones. Sticking to the West Coast there’s Cal State- Fullerton, LA, Long Beach, Monteray Bay, San Diego State, San Jose State, UC Irvine, San Diego, Riverside, Pitzler College.

This was centuries ago of course-ha ha- but for some reason, quite a few people from my small, So. Calif. HS headed off to Hawaii for college. Every single one that I knew eventually transferred out because they were doing so poorly. Apparently there were so many distractions and so much to do that they had a difficult time making school their priority. I have a feeling that many of them went for the same reasons you are listing. Our oldest son’s friend went more recently- I don’t remember which school- and had the same problem, although I know he was not a very serious student. Of course I’m sure there are students who do just fine- it just depends on your mindset going into it. Just something to consider.

Graduated from UH-Manoa long time ago. It’s really laid back. Really. If you are not focused, you will get carried away by… so many things.

You will either enjoy Hawaii or start to get claustrophobic. It is a really tiny state.

I was not a party person, but I belonged to the marching band and met so many people and it was very fun.
The parties I went to were mellow and laid back. Everything was mellow and laid back.

Excellent Asian language department. I have lots of good memories of UH.

I went to high school and my first year of college in Hawaii. There’s a lot to do, especially if you live near the beach (and obviously, at Manoa or Hilo, you will), which can be a major distraction. Being very fair skinned, I also had some issues with racism- I’m not saying everyone there is a racist (because that’s not true by a long shot)- but there is a small (and sometimes vocal) minority of people that can be pretty nasty.

Living in Hawaii is very expensive. Is that something you have given thought to? If you are in a western state, you might explore the WUE program…

I did notice the Hawaii’n laid back feel which was awesome for when i was on vacation. i just sorta imagined all that together with women, longer duration, nice weather, and school. I could imagine some individuals would get thrown off by this and become even more lazy, but i do seem to like hawaii. Are UH Hilo and Manao pretty good schools, i know im going for GE and seeking a certain degree, but i just want to make sure that getting a degree there wont be “looked down on”. Plus i’ve heard and seen good thinks about live there and women there.

It’s extremely expensive living there but my friends who can afford it love Hawaii so much. I second keeping to the west coast – there’s a huge Hawaiian population in SoCal and Las Vegas, NV if you’re in it for the girls lol.

I actually have a high interest in studying in japan but i was just curious as to how Hawaii would do since its very peaceful there and there is quite a few islanders (including japanese). Do you know any good japanese universities that offer serious majors that are taught in english?

in Japan, (idk how it is for international students) but we don’t have “majors” in uni. we take university entrance exams in 12th grade (most likely Jan-Mar), and the way we take the test is like… apply to a school and the “major(dk the word for it)” you want to study. in most schools, you can’t change your “major” after you get in (the subjects you need for entrance exams differ depending on which school and what you want to study). because of this, i believe if you want to be a doctor you apply for the medical major(course). i think every unis have different systems, but i think it’s very difficult for you to pick both language-ish studies and medical-ish studies… the system here is really different from the States.

i believe that if you still want to use English in university, ICU (International Cristian University) might be the best school for you. it’s an liberal arts university (i think it’s the only or one of the few unis that are liberal arts in Japan) and it’s highly known for English and international students. even though it’s a christian uni, if you know what Japan is like towards religion, you wouldn’t be surprised if i told you that almost all of the students are non-religious (most people in Japan are non-religious). so i don’t think you need to worry about religion despite of its name ICU is one of the top unis in Japan.

i’m not positive, but i think private unis are easier to get in for international students rather than national unis.

prestigious unis are for example…
Waseda University (known for language/history-ish and science-ish, but kinda on the language side)
Keio University (known for science-ish studies)
Sophia (Jyochi) University (known for English)
ICU (known for English)

also unis that are called MARCH
Meiji University (known for both language-ish and science-ish)
Aoyama Gakuin University (known for English)
Rikkyo University (known for language-ish)
Chuo University (language-ish)
Hosei University (language-ish)

btw, language/history-ish includes like…
language, history, politics, law religion etc.

science-ish includes
medical, science, geo etc.

feel free to ask because i am searching for unis in Japan too… incase i get denied by unis in the States! (i’m a senior graduating in Mar)
