I've heard there are good dorms, better dorms, and crappy dorms. How do they determine who gets the good and better ones? Does it have to do with when the original application was received? Does it have to do with how much they love you? With your height? (:)) Your GPA? Or is it totally random? If anyone knows, I'd like to hear. Thanks.

They assign dorms by race.

Ooooo -- good one.

Now that we've gotten that out of the way . . .

Freshmen are assigned housing through the office of residential life. However, students can chose if they wish to be in sub free housing and they can apply to live in the East wheelock cluster. Other than that ORL assigns housing to freshmen (admitted students will receive materials over the summer)

Upper classmen go into room draw and based on availibility, they can change rooms ever term. Some choose to live in fraternity/sorority housing and others choose to live in affinity housing.

what are the freshmen dorm reputations? are there dorms that seem more social and dorms that seem more quiet? is there a party dorm?

almost half of the freshman class is going to end up either in choates or the river cluster, which is all freshmen housing. there is also some first year housing in the new dorms that opened this year.

So how do they decide which first-year goes into which dorm??

students will get housing questionnaires over the summer. They will fill them out, send them back and the rest is up to ORL

Sybbie is giving you the bare facts, which are all that you can count on. However, my D and several other kids who have posted here have had the experience that if you write on the questionnaire (in a space that is provided) which dorm or room type that you want, specifically, you have a better than random chance of getting that dorm/room type. For example my D wanted sub free double room in the Choates and she got exactly that, in a year when people had to be assigned into sub-free and into singles.
Doesn't hurt to outline exactly what you want, and seems tohelp a little.

Thank you, cangel. That's the type of info I'm looking for.

if you want an amazing first year, you want to live in the choates (not substance free!!) and life will be amazing

My mom claims that back in the day housing preference was given to people filing apps early and that people sent in preliminary apps when their kids were born.

Leafsfan, what is so good about the Choates?

The Choate dorms actually suck, dorms and location, but it's a fun freshman party.
