I'm going to Prefrosh in a week and I'm wondering whether Caltech's internet is open to just anyone, or if it's secured access. If latter is the case, does anyone know if i can get a temporary account during my visit or something? (hopefully prefrosh will be so fun that i just forget about internet altogether though, haha)

There’s a wireless network, “Caltech Guest”, which has some features disabled (I don’t remember what, exactly, but I remember having trouble on it with either POP or IMAP or both back when I was a prefrosh?), but is open to anybody.

EDIT: Ah, here. The message that pops up when you try to connect to Guest:
“Access to the Caltech Guest wireless network is provided at the discretion of the California Institute of Technology and may be revoked at any time without prior notice. The Caltech Guest wireless network is not a secure network. Other users can potentially intercept information you send and receive. Use of encryption is strongly recommended for any sensitive or private information, including passwords. Use of the Caltech Guest wireless network is restricted to web (http and https), Secure Shell (SSH) and VPN (IPSec over UDP or TCP, NAT-T, PPTP, L2TP) protocols only. Other uses are not allowed. Note that guests are expected to use their home institution’s VPN to access email or any other resources not available via a web browser. Users of the Caltech Guest wireless network are rate-limited and are prevented from communicating directly with each other. All traffic is subject to Network Address Translation. Your network traffic will be monitored as part of Caltech’s normal network management processes. You are subject to the Caltech Institute Policy on Acceptable Use of Electronic Information Resources.”

and upperclassmen might run airpwn if they see too many prefrosh lurking in their rooms.
