lol bump lol bump

in regards to fencersmom, minors and work really depends from state to state. in PA 16-17 year olds are allowed to work 40 hours a week, as long as they don't work past midnight on school nights. laws are only super strict with 14-15 year olds, but as i said before, it varies from state to state (apart from the blanket federal laws like minimum wage, etc.)

spreading so thin does not impress any adcom, it means no passion for anything in particular

I only had one ec.

I volunteered at a local pet shelter, walking the dogs. It made me feel really good because for some of the dogs, I knew they weren't going to be adopted, and I was happy to provide them with some happiness before they were put to death.

crs1909 - u must be a rly dedicated person

crs1909, where did you get in?

Club meeting happen to be DURING school here, so that cancels out a lot for extra time- like sports, music, community service, etc.

Another way people have 20 EC's is if some of their EC's only meet for part of the year. For example, my school Robotics Team is only really really "hard-core" right before the US FIRST competition. School sports, if you don't play in a club/take private lessons, will only last for a few months. (In my personal experience) math competitions are heavily concentrated around February, March, and April.

BUT does these hooks gets cancelled out by the following

1) Asian
2) Male

Actually, in some schools, there's an over-abundance of females. It's not necessarily true with schools like MIT, but it does occur.

Also, I doubt that the fact that you're the first in your family to go to college will be offset by the facts that you're Asian and male. Overcoming just that obstacle is pretty big and colleges DO see that.

Sexism isn't a major factor in most college admissions, at least to any adcom that is not a stupid bigot. It's a factor in those crazy schools like RPI which has a 7:3 M:F rate, but for the ones with like 53% guys 47% girls they dont care.

hey... just wanted to drop a word to the OP,
DOOOD the part about piecing your EC's together and your interest in extra terrestrial life.... Well i dunno what to say.... its like there's someone EXACTLY like me on the other side of the computer...I have exactly the same notions and same philosophy .... I mean how can life be scarce? nothing is scarce the universe is Infinite... nice name btw . (add me to ur buddy list or sumthin) And...on a sidenote I won't be competing with u in admissions coz i am junior(just in case ur wondering how to be different from me... :) )

k2alpinist - lol, wow that's nice, sicne I don't know anyone with my set of interestes (those I know who like science are all into cancer calles, cellulur bio stuff and those I know who are into philosophy are all history geeks, guess I'm a good balance between the two)

But seriously, I'm not trying to fabricate a story form the ECs, what I described really is the purposes of these ECs, and I don't know, maybe I'm just your regular applicant afterall...
