How is Lehigh Better than F&M?

I'm very close to applying ED2 to F&M (franklin & marshall) for pre-med track (bio b.s. major with it), but Lehigh was like a dream school before I heard about F&M. I haven't visited or interviewed Lehigh (stop @ Dec 5th), so I never got the chance to experience it. Why do you think Lehigh is an excellent education institution, and how is it better than F&M?

Fundamentally, F&M is a liberal arts college, undergraduate only while Lehigh is a small research university with programs in business, engineering and education is addition to arts and sciences. They have a broad range of grad programs. Quite different schools. What type of school do you prefer?

@TomSrOfBoston I never had the chance to visit Lehigh, but I prefer a school with a strong science department and good premed prep. I don’t care about the size of a college, but the more personal the professors, the better (for me). I like rural & suburb schools in either the mountains or countryside, and that’s both schools. I want a school that will best prepare me for the real world, have more connections with people and businesses, and be well recognized, while giving great needs based scholarships.

@TomSrOfBoston it feels like I’m very skeptical about applying to Lehigh ED2 because I never did a campus tour or had an interview, so I feel like my chances are much lower there because of this.

In my personal view, Lehigh, Carnegie Mellon, Penn, Penn State, swarthmore, haverford and bryn mawr are the top schools in Pennsylvania. The TOPS, and the most competitive, too. Lehigh has a great track record getting kids into med school, too.

@proudfather I’ve finally decided to go with Lehigh for ED2 solely because of its reputation and excellence for a good education, nationally, compared to F&M.

Contrary to popular belief, F&M and Lehigh are actually equal in academic reputation, F&M having the slight edge if you look closer into detail. Have fun at Lehigh!!

Hey IndubitableDan, do not, and I repeat do not listen to coolcampusdude. He is a first class schmuck in college knowledge. Clearly, Lehigh is the better of the two.

@Coolcampusdude & @Collegewizard8 (and others), thank you both for your help! I just got into Lehigh ED2 and I will probably do the 5-year arts & engineering prog. (not IDEAS) w/ a possible pre-med track. I chose Lehigh over F&M mainly because of financial aid (VERY generous) and other big factors. I’d say Lehigh, Bucknell, & Penn State have an equal undergraduate academic reputation, while F&M is an “up and coming school” (http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-liberal-arts-colleges/up-and-coming), so you can decide where F&M stands.

Dan, I am so glad to hear you got a generous financial package! You deserved it!
