How is life for a lesbian at Duke?

I’ve visited Duke a couple of times, and it’s definitely a frontrunner. My biggest concern is that I (a pretty obviously queer masc lesbian) will feel out of place on campus. I’m not sure if I’d be able to get into parties, or what that scene would be like. Does anyone have any thoughts?

See this thread. There may be other threads on CC. And maybe less relevant but I included the campus pride index. Good luck.

One other thought - admissions could certainly set you up with a student or two that you could speak with …regarding race, religion, sexual orientation, major or really anything.

An old colleague of mine used to work at Duke’s LGBTQ+ student center and always spoke highly of it and the queer student experience in general there. It has been way too long since I lived in the area to speak much to what the campus experience is like nowadays but when I lived there Duke was always the go-to spot for student-organized events with queer artists, musicians, writers, etc. and UNC students regularly traveled there for many of their events. Durham and Chapel Hill both have really thriving queer communities and I think would still be a great place for students these days.
