How is life @ MIT?

So.. guys..

how is life at MIT?

Do you guys have free time like 4-5 hours a day?

Do you guys think I will have time to continue working with my online stuff? Like the sites I develop? The small online shop I run?

Can you do only the subjects you like and have pleasure doing?

Thanks for helping I really want to go there..

On a normal school day, I definitely don't have 4-5 hours free... but I do have plenty of free time on the weekends to do what I want. (And I am sort of a workaholic, so maybe I do it to myself.)

I'm sure you would have time to work on websites and such -- I mean, people have plenty of time to work on UROPs and other campus jobs, so it shouldn't be a problem.

People are very busy here, but it's usually possible to make time for things you really enjoy doing.

Is it possible to be too busy?

yeah, when you find yourself supposedly being in 4 places at once between a scheduled evening lab, proctoring an evening exam (as a TA), rehearsal for your upcoming show, and (frinstance) going out to dinner for your gf's birthday, you're probably too busy.

that might just be my take on things, however.

keep in mind that people like to overload themselves and then complain about it.
I took 4 classes (started out with 5 but I didn't like one of them, so I dropped it), was heavily involved in extracurriculars, held a UROP, had time to go out and whatnot on the weekends, and slept around 8 hours a day. 4-5 hours of free time a day is certainly possible (one of the people on my floor plays smash for around that amount of time every day, so we can consider it to be free time), just not likely since most people are involved in other stuff.

You can totally do your website stuff. With respect to only doing the subjects you like - there are math, physics, chem, bio, and hum/socsci requirements which you may or may not get a kick out of, but assuming that you major in stuff you like, then hopefully you'll enjoy most of your coursework :-D

Oh god, so true. Any question from a prospective student asking if we work too hard should be prefaced with this quote in large bold letters.

Some of us work too hard. Some of us don't.

I have a final in less than five hours, and I've spent the past hour on various parts of the internet not doing anything productive.

nice to know that!!
I tought you had no free time at all

I will be visiting you guys at the Fall to stay for one day and possibly who knows I will study be there at 2006

"Some of us work too hard. Some of us don't.

I have a final in less than five hours, and I've spent the past hour on various parts of the internet not doing anything productive."

I could beat almost anyone in being least productive this weekend

Hey, what do MITers do in Cambridge / Boston on the weekends or whenever you have free time?

Eat Italian food in the North End! My "no more finals" present tomorrow night is going to be a night out at the movies and dinner in the North End.

I also personally enjoy shopping on Newbury Street and Copley Square, but this is because I am girly.

laughs i got weirded out, last weekend, walking down newbury st when i was feeling intensely antisocial...on a saturday afternoon, that place is so frightening!

as for me, this weekend i'll be helping my friends move in/out/away, going to a going-away party for a couple of friends who're moving to the west coast, and cleaning my room. if i have time, i might grab a book and sit out in the sun, fix my bike, or repair various items i have lying about my room. there's also this box of old clothes and shirts that want cutting, tieing, and sewing, and furniture that should be painted. if it were term, i'd have a tournament, then there'd be plenty of sleep, some socializing and partying, and tooling. oh, and work on sunday afternoon.

I actually prefer going shopping when it's busy, because then I can get lost in the shuffle and not get accosted by overeager salespersons.

...said the Macgregor resident

you'll definitely have time to do things you like...as long as you want to sacrifice sleep for it. it's not that bad, you get used to it, plus everyone does it. =)
