Money isn't a problem but some merit scholarships would be nice. I plan on majoring in the business field. What do you think of my list? From what I see, my safeties are Scranton, Fordham, and Bentley. My matches are Boston U, Binghamton U, Northeastern. My reaches are BC and Nova. Are there any suggestions you have? Also, I'm leaning towards majoring in Management, but I have heard that a degree in the field isn't impressive or useful for finding a job, is that true?

Well, I suppose a good deal of people don’t see degrees in “Management” or “Business” worthwhile unless received from a few select schools (e.g. Penn, MIT, Michigan, UVA, Berkeley, Georgetown, Cornell, CMU, NYU, Notre Dame, etc.). I would say that majors like the two I listed from most schools might be seen as soft by some employers or even peers. I have always viewed a degree in something you enjoy such as engineering or English or history as more worthwhile for future ventures. From that stepping stone, you can receive your MBA later on, and it probably looks better in general.

As to your first part, I think you have a good group of colleges with a very even distribution between safeties, matches, and reaches. Boston College is probably the best school on your list and is a reach, but I’m sure a legacy plays into your advantage there. I would say that they have a very good undergraduate business program though that might be worth following if that is your intention. Out of the previous colleges I listed, if your heart is really set on business as an undergraduate, NYU might be a good choice unless it otherwise seems unappealing to you. It fits the region you seem to be geographically focused on. While I’m not sure you could get into Stern, you stand a decent chance of getting into their CAS at the least. Another two schools I’ll just throw out there: maybe Syracuse or Lehigh?

Thank you for the advice and suggestions, keep them coming

Not gonna lie. Boston U, Binghamton U, Northeastern should be easier to get into compared to Bentley U.

Bump…

First of all, I suggest using your ACT instead of your SAT; a 31 converts to something closer to a 2050.

Second, “Management” is pretty nebulous; most schools will expect you to concentrate in a particular facet of business (finance, marketing etc.). The advantage of concentrating is that it lets companies looking to hire know that you have studied a particular discipline, i.e., accounting majors get to interview for accounting jobs.

Third, I think your assessment of safety-match-reach is pretty accurate. If you don’t mind being a little further away from home I’d look at the Kelley School at Indiana University (Bloomington). It is a well regarded school and with your stats I believe you’ll be an automatic pre-admit to the business school as well as automatically qualifying for a merit scholarship (check the site, but I think a 3.8 & 31 can get you $9,000/year).
