How is my college list?

^ Didn’t we talk about Kilts in another discussion? lol…

And I will probably qualify for some FA, (my sister who attends CC receives some FA, though the amount or type I am not sure of) but merit aid will help a lot since knowing how financially tight we are now, I can’t afford much and I rather not take out loans.

Find out what kind of FA your sister gets. She may have gotten some kind of scholarship money, and not FA based on need from a FAFSA.

Also, find out what her EFC is from submitting a FAFSA.

^^^ So we did, Kalookakoo! I thought your screen name sounded familiar! :)

Haven’t talked to my sister much, so I haven’t gotten around to asking her about her FA circumstance. (Stupid cashier job maxing out her part-time hours…)

My list has evolved into:
Case Western Reserve University (“Merit friendly”)
University Of Connecticut ( For the hell of it)
Rutgers University (For the hell of it)
University of Pittsburgh (“Merit friendly”)
SUNY Binghamton ( In-State)
SUNY Stony Brook (In-state)
Queens College (Local Safety)

Bit better than before?
Case is a tough one, since it’s in Ohio, but if it financially goes nicely, I don’t see why my parents would object to loudly.

^
Edit button disappeared…

Scratching off WV.
How about Maryland (college park) or Michigan State?

You should be shooting higher. You have no reaches right now.

ee/cs potential major - You should try adding WPI and Stevens to your list. WPI is in Worcester, which is a bus ride away from NYC, and Stevens is in Hoboken, NJ.
UConn does offer OOS instate tuition rates for certain gpa and sat combos. Check out their website. Most schools have CS as a major, but if EE is a consideration, you have to get rid of the LACs on the list.

Ok I asked her.

While attending community college, she has pure unsubsidized loans, and gets about 2400 per semester, and my parents cover the rest.

I’m not crazy about your list so far.

I like these on your list:
Case Western Reserve University (“Merit friendly”)
University of Pittsburgh (“Merit friendly”)
SUNY Stony Brook (In-state, very good engineering)

I dislike these on your list:
University Of Connecticut (Not that special, not cheap)
Rutgers University (Not that special, not cheap)
SUNY Binghamton ( In-State - not really an engineering powerhouse)
Queens College (Local Safety - not for engineering, go to city college)

I think you need reaches and some better schools that I think you’ll get into. You’re a mathlete after all who wants to study engineering. Are you not eligible for FinAid?

Reaches worth considering:
Cornell (longshot, but nothing ventured nothing gained)
Columbia Engineering (easier to get into than Arts and Science, but still hard)
Lehigh
Cooper Union (free tuition, tough school, but free tuition)
Carnegie Mellon

Matches:
RPI (Great school)
Northeastern (Excellent school in Boston if you do the coop program)
WPI
SUNY Buffalo (If you absolutely want to get away)
Penn State (top 25 nationally)
Maryland (top 25 nationally)

Safeties:
City College

If you’re willing to venture out into the midwest (it’s not THAT far), your options improve considerably

Reach:
Northwestern
Illinois
Wisconsin

Match:
Georgia Tech (Outstanding but very very tough school. If you are really that good at math, this should be on your list).
Purdue (Top 10 school)
Ohio State (merit friendly)
Rose-Hulman

I second CRD’s suggestion of UB…very solid engineering program, likely you’ll be offered Honors College and merit aid, and it’s affordable anyway. Buffalo has a lot of LI/NYC kids so they even offer coach bus transportation for students several times a year at a very reasonable cost which should make your dad happy (there’s also an airport nearby and flights are pretty reasonable to LI)! UB is a big school, but it feels much smaller once you’re there and know your way around (most of the academic/office buildings are interconnected by walkways/tunnels) and they’re finishing a brand new engineering building this year on North campus. Always a lot to do on campus and in the area and loads of opportunities for motivated undergrads to get involved, do research, etc. Don’t let the winter weather reputation scare you away - they do get more snowfall but are very good at handling it and Buffalo seems to get more sunshine than other parts of the state for some reason! You can get more info from a poster named crazed - her son was accepted to some other good schools and chose UB’s engineering and honors programs instead.

You might investigate Univ of Rochester, which has been generous with merit and need based aid (afaik, no income cutoffs), and RIT which also has merit scholarships is a co-op school.

I might as well add the other half of my list (my dad’s) which are all reaches and I wasn’t crazy about my list either =( :

Reach:
Cornell
Columbia
Carnegie Mellon

Match:
Case Western Reserve University (“Merit friendly”)
University Of Connecticut ( For the hell of it)
Rutgers University (For the hell of it)
University of Pittsburgh (“Merit friendly”)
SUNY Buffalo ( In-State)
SUNY Stony Brook (In-state)
Ohio State (Though, I thought they weren’t merit friendly so I got rid of it before)
Univ Virginia
Syracuse University

Safety:
City College (Local Safety)

So?

^ bump

I’m more comfortable with this list than all the other rough ones I’ve made.

Reasonable Reaches

Notre Dame
Wash U
Carnegie Mellon
Vanderbilt
…are all worth considering!

PM me for anything else?

Reach:

Submitting this to my dad as my college list. If you guys have anymore comments just let me know, but as of now, this is it.
