Hi, I am currently a junior who is trying to form an ideal list of colleges to apply to. I am interested in business, so if you feel there needs to be adjustments, keep that in mind.
Basic Info:
UW GPA:3.55 W:3.85
Act:30
Competitive/ Rigourous High School
Schools:
ED:
BC (EA- Restrictive)
Bucknell (ED2)
EA: University of Richmond
UMich
Wake Forest
Northeastern
Villanova
UMDCP
RD: William & Mary
Bentley
IU-B
Miami U (OH)
Penn State
Elon
UCONN
Your test scores are pretty similar to my son’s, SAT 1350 which is the equivalent of a 30 ACT, but your GPA is far higher than his, 3.22. My son was admitted to almost every engineering school he applied to, Penn State, Ohio State, Purdue, Saint Louis, Marquette, Ohio University, Colorado State, and several others. You won’t have any problems being admitted and your GPA will qualify you for good FinAid. With mu son’s GPA he got almost a full ride in OU and $25K in Marquette, of course that also includes need based grants which have got nothing to do with GPA.
I’m no expert on the matter, but from your list I recognize several colleges with high standing in the scholars community like Villanova and Penn State. I see you are considering Miami U (OH). I don’t know much about Miami U but I’ve heard that Ohio University has a really good business school and the best part of OU is that they are very generous with students.
I suggest you start looking for scholarships right away. Some are available during junior year. Check www.fastweb.com
@otoledo Thanks so much! Although financials are not a big issue, extra scholarship money never hurts. Do you think I need to adjust my list at all? Maybe add or take away some schools?
Richmond and Wake Forest dont have EA
@LordSwag Oh oops. I knew they had ED and I guess I just figured that they had EA as well. Thank you
Yep, other then that the list seems nice and balanced
Updated List:
ED:
BC (EA- Restrictive)
Bucknell (ED2)
EA: UMich
Northeastern
Villanova
UMDCP
Miami U (OH)
Bentley
RD: William & Mary
Richmond
Wake Forest
IU-B
Penn State
Elon
UConn
Good list but I would remove William & Mary. By law they must take a minimum of 2/3rds VA residents. With a 30 ACT, which is otherwise awesome, your chances are slim.
Lehigh would be a better choice.
Be careful with OOS for a business major.
Why did you choose ED2 for Bucknell? Is it to see what happens with BC?
I think that looks like a balanced list. Which state do you live in?
@BatesParent2019 I see your point. Even my parents said that W&M is an ED school because the rates are higher and I did not like it enough to do so. Therefore, I put them in RD, but more than likely it will be a rejection. I visited Lehigh before and did not really like it.
@woogzmama I live in CT, which explains the UConn
OK. I didn’t know whether you were PA, MD, CT, or another state whose flagship you applied to.
Just food for thought. The BC Early Action program is for super stat kids. With a 30 ACT that puts you at the bottom of the middle 50% for all phases of admissions.
Is it wise to go ED2 to Bucknell to accommodate BC?
@BatesParent2019 Okay I am so happy that you brought that up. You just said that BC EA is for kids with super stats. Does that mean that applying EA not only does not help me, but actually hurts me? I would be compared to those with greater stats. I heard this from someone else too and I just need to confirm it because if this is the case, then I might re-arrange my list.
Yes my son was recruited by BC for track and the coach mentioned that even most athletes apply regular decision because of this quirk. So, we decided against pursuing BC because we would have lost the opportunity to apply ED at other highly selective schools that wanted him where he was pre-read for ED. In NESCAC, Patriot League and Ivy, sports recruiting is done in ED.
@BatesParent2019 Do you think it would be wise to then put BC into RD then and apply ED1 Bucknell and ED2 Richmond? As you mentioned yourself BC is a bit of a stretch.
Boston College is not restrictive early action. If it were, you wouldn’t be able to apply to the other early action colleges.
@bouders It is restrictive in the case that you cannot apply ED1 to another school, only ED2.
Yes if you like those schools that is exactly what I would do but its up to you which order.
I was just pointing out that EA at BC was not acheiving what you wanted.
If BC is not restrictive, then apply to BC and all the other EA schools , including Richmond, along with Bucknell ED1. With luck, you’ll be done by Christmas.
BC does not allow you to apply ED1 somewhere else if you apply EA.
