You'll never get into Wake with that. UMCP is prob. a reach too. No BU/any other Boston schools? :)

no, i live in Boston and need to get far away. Also, ive been researching U Maryland through college books and stuff and according to those, it was a safety/match, not a reach

It's far from a safety for OOS. Whatever man...

REACH: Wake Forest
MATCH: Tulane, Miami, George Washington, Maryland, Georgia, Penn State
SAFETY: American, Florida State, Clemson, Auburn, Arizona, Arizona State

i never said that you were wrong. i was just stating what i had recieved from the research i had already done. Also, what does OOS stand for? I keep reading symbol things like this and cant interpret them. Also, thanx to the next person for the safety/match/reach list

OOS=Out of State.

Your SAT M+V seem solid for many of these schools. A 3.4 W will hurt a bit but what do you know what your class rank was? Was there a trend up or down in your GPA throughout HS? Also try and get the Writing score up a bit or atleast ask some of these schools if they will consider the writing next year because many didn't last year.

UMD's average W GPA last year was a 3.9 and its mid 50% SAT was a 1240-1380 and is an 1860-2070 if converted equally using the writing. I don't know if it is a safety. Are you going to take the SAT again in the fall? Apply to UMD before the priority deadline(last year dec. 1st) because they take 90% of their students then. It gets much harder after.

You have taken a lot of honors courses, so I would be very concerned about having a weighted GPA of 3.4. More B's than A's, or do you have a few C's with mostly A's? Take an objective look at that, since schools will.

Reaches: U maryland, Wake Forest, George Washington University

Match (or low reach for rolling schools, if you apply too late in the cycle): Penn State, U Georgia, Uconn, American University, U Miami FL

Safeties: Clemson, Auburn, FSU, Arizona, ASU, Tulane (I would have put Tulane as a match, but they might be more aggressive in getting students these days)

This break out is based on certain state schools, such as Penn State, value GPA more than SAT. So when you assess your chances, weight your GPA 2/3 and your SAT's only 1/3, and you'll have a better idea of where you might stand.

Since you like big state uni's, how about U of South Carolina? It's making a major attempt to attract a more national body, I hear the campus is nice, and you could shine there.

Wolves is pretty accurate. I think you can afford a few more reaches and a few less safeties.

really? All of the people who "know what they are talking about" say that i need the opposite. More safeties and less reaches. i hate that everyone is giving me different and opposite insight

University of Miami, U of Maryland & GW are reaches.

American U, Uconn, Penn State and U of Georgia are safeties

I wouldn't say American is a safety. They have avarage of about a 3.5 unweighted and the OP has a 3.4 weighted so his unweighted must be lower

I understand your frustration in getting advice that seems all over the lot.

But drill down a bit on the websites of the schools on your list, and you will see why there is some disagreement with A2wolves6. For instance, he /she says that GWU and U Maryland are matches, while others, incldg me, say GWU and Maryland are reaches. Look for yourself and you will see that for both these schools, GPA is more important than SAT's. 82% of GW's entering class had a GPA of 3.6 or higher. 65% of the class placed in the top 10% of their graduating HS class. Where do you fit in that picture? Maryland is about the same. Note that they re-calculate the GPA and eliminate the pluses and minuses. What is your GPA if you do that?

You can figure out a lot more about the schools by checking their Common Data Sets. You might want to do that for each of the schools on your list.

Did you check out U of South Carolina? Curious what you thought.

I would say that schools which are more gpa oriented such as GWU, Maryland and U of Miami would be reaches. GWU has 65% in the top 10% while Miami has a bit higher at 68%. Maryland is a bit lower but still in the high 50% low 60% range.

SAT ranges are basically equal. Miami is reporting a 1220-1370 on their website that would bring the average up to nearly a 1295-1300.

Schools which are still good but less selective would be Penn State, American and University of Georgia.

I'd say Penn State and American would be matches and University of Georgia a safety.

So reaches are: U of Maryland, GWU and U of Miami

Matches are: American and Penn State

Safeties would be: University of Georgia, Arizona State, U of Arizona and Clemson

In my opinion good list.

Maybe Lafayette, Union, Franklin & Marshall and Holy Cross.

where do you come up with those schools in relation to the types of schools i chose?

The schools gellino mentioned are nothing close to what you are looking for. I'd go with the schools you initially picked out and use my recommendations as guidelines for you chances.

I was merely mentioning schools I thought he had a chance at given his stats. I get the impression that all four I mentioned are easier to get into than Wake Forest or Tulane

I guess, if he wants liberal arts those are some good choices
